The Rhode Island National Guard (RING) 110th Public Affairs Detachment photographs include photographs, newspaper clippings, negatives, slides, reports, news releases and memoranda. There are a small amount of 35mm color glass slides. Items relate to various events including Leapfest (an annual parachuting competition, 1989-1993); welcoming back the troops from Desert Storm (1991); military exercises and training of various units and history files (scrapbooks) of the 110th Public Affairs Detachments including the publications of the Ocean State Guardian and The Rhody Guardsman.

Historical note

The 110th Public Affairs Detachment serves all public relations functions of the Rhode Island National Guard. The 110th PA published The Rhody Guardsman under the provisions of AR 360-81. Begun in June 1972, this was a monthly publication and was an authorized, unofficial publication of the Rhode Island National Guard. The 110th also published the Ocean State Guardian, a bi-monthly publication, from 1982-1983.

Subjects include the history of the 110th Public Information Detachment, the commencement of the monthly publication of The Rhody Guardsman which includes memorandum and distribution lists and copies of publication from first edition (June 1972, Vol. 1., No. 1) to Vol. 4, No. 12 (December 1975) with gaps, The Ocean State Guardian (1982-1983), clippings, photographs and memoranda related to Leapfest (1984-1994) and other various events and RING-related topics.

Subjects include Cook’s School refresher course with Dave Jarvis (February 1991), the movement of civil war cannons and replacement with WWI howitzer by the 243d Engineer Battalion (undated), Hurricane Bob, cannon firing at the State House, training, RI Department of Economic Development tourism images, slides of black-and-white images from the early 1970’s, views of personnel, military exercises and training by the 243d EN AT93 in Puerto Rico, Armed Forces Night at the Pawtucket Red Sox (1994) and other events (1989-1991).

Contents Note: Contains 35mm black-and-white negatives, 120mm black-and-white negatives and contact prints. Subjects include employer support of the guard, military exercises and training, the Heart Association flowers for deployed troops and ESGR visit.

Series 10. Leapfest
Contains 35mm color slides, black-and-white and color photographs, 35mm and 120mm negatives, Leapfest emblems and notes. Subjects include the international parachute jumping competition Leapfest (1972, 1986-1987, 1989-199 5), Pass and Review QTS PT (undated), Troop Cmd Christmas Party (1992), information on the history of parachuting and parachuting competitions and a helicopter shot (1973). Many photographs were originally in adhesive albums. These albums pages were copied and the photocopy of the arrangement of the original album pages and the photographs contained on that page were transferred to archival folders.
