Scope & content

The Newport vertical file, created and maintained by the Redwood Library and Athenaeum for reference purposes, consists of articles, clippings, newspapers, photocopies, and reprints regarding the people, society, historic homes and buildings, maritime activities, civic organizations, music festivals, public celebrations, sporting events, commerce and industry, art, and history of Newport, Rhode Island. This collection has been organized into eleven series, which emphasize various aspects of Newport’s history, society, and culture. General topics concerning Rhode Island history and historic buildings are also included and are found within Series 5. This collection also contains three oversize flat boxes, which cover various series, and are identified by the abbreviation “OS” in the inventory.
