Historical note

The Monday Morning Musical Club was an all-female musical organization founded in Providence in1904, comprised of musicians and music-appreciators. Organizations of this nature were very popular at the time, the National Federation of Music Clubs having been formed around 1900. The Monday Morning Musical Club became heavily involved in philanthropy in the Providence area, funding various causes and putting on charitable entertainments. The Club worked closely with the Providence Public Library, and gifted collections of music to the library while also contributing financially. The Club was responsible for founding the Rochambeau branch of the Providence Public Library. Additional donations were made to other libraries, including the Brown University Library and the Library of Congress. The Club organized a number of musical events at the library, while also putting on regular concerts. Some of its members achieved prominence, including Ada Holding Miller, who eventually became the president of the National Federation of Music Clubs. The Monday Morning Musical Club was disbanded in 1968.
