Scope & content

The Louise A. Tilly papers contain materials ranging from 1960 to 1998, with the bulk of materials dated between 1974 and 1995. This collection of drafts of scholarly papers, research notes and materials, academic department administrative materials, and professional correspondence is arranged into six series.

The first series, Writings, is made up of drafts, final copies and correspondence about the numerous articles written both independently and collaboratively by Tilly dated between 1960 and 1995. Included in this series are drafts of Tilly's translation of Meme Santerre, Women, Work and Family, The Rebellious Century, and Class Conflict and Collective Action.

Series 2, Research, contains Tilly's research notes and materials, primarily dated between 1970 and 1995, with a small amount of materials from 1955. All of the research relates to tobacco and textile workers and social movements in France and Italy from the late nineteenth century. Materials include statistical data sheets, photocopies of archival materials, and handwritten research notes.

In the third series, Writings by Others, are articles and papers by colleagues that Tilly collected between 1968 and 1995. A large number of papers are written by faculty members of the Center for Research on Social Organization (CRSO) at the University of Michigan. Another large component of the series is the papers written by Charles Tilly.

Series 4 includes administrative materials from both the CRSO at the University of Michigan and the Committee for Historical Studies (CHS) at the New School for Social Research. The bulk of these materials are memos between faculty members, meeting minutes, course materials, and strategic planning materials. The CRSO items are from the early 1980s. The CHS materials range from the early 1980s to 1995.

Series 5 is comprised of materials from conferences spoken at, organized or attended by Louise Tilly dated between 1993 and 1995. Included in this series are materials from the American Historical Association and the European Economic and Political Integration Project.
