Scope & content

Thirty (30) color photographic slides taken by Dr. Richard Aubin-Fischer who was a minister with United Church of Christ and participated in the 1973 United Farm Workers strike against the growers and the United Brotherhood of Teamsters in Coachella, California. The photographs depict the strikers along the road and inside several buildings. Several images include Cesar Chavez.

Biographical/Historical note

The Rev. Dr. Richard Aubin-Fischer was the son of the deceased Edward and Eva (Tangarone) Fischer of Hartford, CT and the husband of Gail Aubin-Fischer of Westport, MA. He received his B.A. from Union College in Schenectady, NY, attended the New School for Social Research in New York, NY, and earned his M.Div. at Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, CA and a D.Min. from Andover Newton Theological School. He was ordained on October 17, 1965 as a United Church of Christ minister in the Connecticut Conference. Dr. Aubin-Fischer served churches in many parts of the country including Brockton and Dartmouth, Massachusetts; San Francisco, California; Green Farms, Connecticut; Cumberland, Peace Dale (Peac Dale Congregational Church, 2001-2002); and Tiverton, Rhode Island. Some of his work projects have included mission trips to Illinois, Germany, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Guatemala and Cuba. He was a pastoral counselor and a clinical psychologist as well as an intentional interim minister. For 30 years he was involved in the Media Ministry/Rhode Island Council of Churches as Director of Television Productions. He hosted two television shows: Face the Nation, and Healing Life’s Hurts, for over 20 years. He interviewed many interesting people including Cesar Chavez. He was a lifelong activist for social justice.

Rev. Dr. Richard David Aubin-Fischer, died at home in Westport, MA, on March 31, 2017. He was 78 years old. He is survived by 2 sisters, Dorothy (Fischer) Wurts and her husband William of Old Wethersfield, CT and Marjorie (Fischer) Paust and her husband Brian of Petersburg, AK. He leaves 4 children: Julie (Fischer) Thorpe and her husband Brian of Cranston, RI; David Fischer of Providence, RI; Tina McDonald and her husband Andrew Pacheco of Tiverton, RI and Heather (McDonald) Ellis and her husband Christian of Wareham, MA. He leaves 4 grandchildren: Adam, Jocelyn, Aden, and Benjamin.
