Scope & content

This collection contains the records of the Sarah Doyle Center for Women and Gender at Brown University. Materials include staff logs; administrative and event files for student groups including the Greenlight Network, Third World Women's Affairs, the Women's Escort Service, and the Women's Political Task Force; subject files regarding abortion, LGBTQ sexual health, and South African Divestiture; student papers; and print material such as handbooks, journals, and newsletters. Materials date from 1970 to 1992 and are arranged into 6 series.

Series 1, ADMINISTRATIVE, 1970-1992, includes correspondence, founding documents, and meeting materials. Of particular note are the staff logs in which student staff of the Center recorded daily operations. This series is arranged alphabetically by record type and then chronologically.

Series 2, STUDENT GROUPS, 1974-1990, includes handbooks, meeting materials, clippings, and flyers, pertaining to student groups that developed within the Sarah Doyle Center. Groups include the Greenlight Network, the Lesbian/Gay Student Alliance, Third World Women's Affairs, Women of Brown United, the Women's Escort Service, and the Women's Political Task Force. Of particular interest are the patient follow-up questionnaires gathered by the Women's Escort Service from women who had abortions. This series is arranged alphabetically by the name of the group.

Series 3, EVENTS, 1970-1990, includes clippings, flyers, and planning materials, for events organized by the Sarah Doyle Center and related student groups. Of particular interest are the clippings, notes, and surveys from the 1985 Speak Out against sexual assault on Brown University's campus, as well as the planning materials for the 1978 Women's Festival. This series is arranged alphabetically by the name of the event and then chronologically.

Series 4, SUBJECT FILES, 1970-1990, includes clippings, correspondence, and readings, related to the Sarah Doyle Center's advocacy work and interests. Topics include abortion rights, affirmative action, the Equal Rights Amendment, LGBTQ rights, and divestiture from South Africa during apartheid. Of particular note are the Lesbian Feminist Union of Rhode Island's surveys from 1979 that ask physicians about their acceptance of lesbian lifestyles, comfort with treating lesbians, and interest in learning more about health services for lesbians. This series is arranged alphabetically by topic or person's last name.

Series 5, STUDENT PAPERS, 1973-1992, contains papers that were written by students for various women's studies courses and donated to the Sarah Doyle Center. General paper topics include abortion, breast health, contraception, feminism, and gender roles. This series is arranged alphabetically by paper title.

Series 6, PRINT MATERIAL, 1970-1991, includes handbooks, journals, and newsletters. Titles of interest include "Aphra: The Feminist Literary Magazine," "The Brown Spectator: Women vs Womyn," "Sex at Brown: An Informational Booklet by and for Brown Students on Contraception, Abortion, and Sexuality Services" and "Womenswords: A Feminist Literary Journal." This series is arranged alphabetically by title.
