Scope & content

The Pembroke College Athletic and Recreation Association (ARA) records document the activities of the Association, its relationship with the physical education department, intramural sports at Pembroke College, and some of the athletic interaction between Pembroke College and other women's colleges in New England. The records have been organized into three series:

Series I. Executive Board contains the bulk of the collection. This series includes the Association's constitution and by-laws, minutes, records from secretary's notebooks, committee reports, annual and semester reports, lists, notes, correspondence, programs and budgets. The secretarys' notebooks are comprised primarily of minutes. In the 1960s the association kept minutes, reports, budgets, and programs in an 'ARA Bible," which provides a complete picture of the organization's activities.

Series II. Committees includes records from the Intramurals Committee. For other committee reports, see Series I, especially the "ARA Bible".

Series III. Events and activities includes programs, invitations, and lists of events and activities. Some of these activities include an annual banquet and freshman field day, a bike loan program, and events featuring off-campus guests.

Historical note

Begun in 1903, the Athletic Association of the Women's College in Brown University, later Pembroke College, was a student organization to "promote interest in athletic and physical education" in cooperation with the Department of Physical Education. During the 1959-1960 academic year the Association changed its name to the Athletic and Recreation Association (ARA), reflecting the informal change in the physical education department's name. The ARA began as a voluntary organization, but by the 1930s all students paid an activities fee that made them automatic members. At first it was mostly composed of dormitory representatives. In addition to awarding athletic letters and numbers and other honors, the ARA sponsored intramural and interscholastic competitions, events, picnics, and other gatherings. The ARA's executive board conducted most of the business and activities of the organization.
