Scope & content

Approximately 108 drawings document the landscape architecture designs of Evelyn Nowack Poehler, 1947-1977. The bulk of the collection documents her work at the Wethersfield Estate of Chauncey D. Stillman. The collection includes drawings for utilities, gardens, terraces, pools, elevations, and planting plans recorded on blueprints, heavy parchment, acetate, and semi-transparent tissue. There are a few drawings for residences in Boca Grande, FL, Sharon, CT, and Croton-on-Hudson, NY.

The collection includes a few drawings by George Frederick Poehler for their house in Sharon, CT. The drawings include elevations, plot lines, and floor plans.

There are three black and white photogaphs and one color negative of the Wethersfield Estate taken by Gottscho-Schleisner, Inc.

Evelyn Nowack Poehler, born in Rochester, NY 1913 October 21, graduated from the Lowthorpe School of Landscape Architecture for Women in 1932. A registered landscape architect in New York and Connecticut, she designed the Wethersfield Estate gardens located in Amenia, NY working with owner Chancey D. Stillman over several decades. Her husband, architect George Frederick Poelher, designed the garden's Palladian Arch and and an addition to the house known as the Gloriette.

They made their home in Sharon, CT and later Salisbury, CT. She maintained a private practice designing gardens for residences in addition to her work with Stillman. A Beaux Arts architect, he with Harry van Dyke and John Barrington Bayley designed an addition to the Frick Collection in New York City. She died 1999 February 15 and he died 2001 September 28.
