Historical note
Frederick William Rhinelander (1828-1904) was born in New York to his father of the same name and Mary Lucy Ann Stevens Rhinelander. He graduated from Columbia College in 1847. In 1851, he married Frances D. Skinner, daughter of the Revered Thomas H. Skinner. Together, they had eight children, Mary, Frances, Ethel, Frederick William Jr, Alice, Helen, Thomas Newbold, and Philip.
He was a member of the Knickerbocker, City and Southside Sportmen's Clubs, the Downtown Association, the Mendelssohn Glee Club and the American Geographical Society. He served as vice president and president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He died of heart failure in Sturbridge, Massachusetts in September, 1904.
