Scope & content

This collection consists primarily of manuscript drafts of books written by members of the Hall family, particularly Henry M. Hall and his three daughters. Items related to Henry M. Hall include reminiscences of his boyhood at his grandmother’s house, and unbound manuscripts of his hunting and outdoors books. Newspaper articles and short stories written by Frances M. Howard and Julia W.H. Stickley are also included in this collection. The items related to Rosalys H. Hall are primarily drafts of children’s books with notes and research. Correspondence is between Rosalys H. Hall and the library staff of the Redwood Library and Athenaeum, as well as with illustrators and other authors. Miscellaneous items are comprised of copies of articles written about Julia Ward Howe by other authors, character descriptions by George B. Haskell, a copy of a letter home from Samuel Ward (1756-1832), and a death notice of Rosalys H. Hall.
