Scope & content
The bulk of this collection is made up of letters sent to Frances Hubbert from 1936-1938 regarding her efforts to get Lady Winifred Fortescue’s (1888-1951) 1935 publication, Perfume from Provence, published in the United States for retail sale. Hubbert regularly corresponded with Lady Fortescue in France, Ferris Greenslet (1875-1959), the editor-in-chief at Houghton Mifflin Company, and other small bookstore owners and librarians during her efforts to get the book published in the U.S. Once the book was published by the Houghton Mifflin Company in March 1937, Hubbert was active in promoting the sale of the book and later in getting other works by Lady Fortescue published in the United States. Lady Fortescue and Hubbert continued to correspond over the years and in a letter dated November 1, 1941, Lady Fortescue described her life in England during World War I.
Also included are two invitations sent to Hubbert, one for the Breakers Ball on July 9, 1955, and the other for the Tiffany Ball held on July 13, 1957. Both of these balls were for the benefit of the Preservation Society of Newport County, Rhode Island.
