Biographical note
William Channing Gibbs (1789-1871) was born in Newport, Rhode Island, on February 10, 1789, the youngest son of George (1775-1803) and Mary Channing Gibbs. Gibbs served in the Rhode Island state militia and rose to the rank of Major General. From 1816 through 1820, he represented Newport in the Rhode Island General Assembly and then served as the governor from May 2, 1821, to May 5, 1824. He was married to Mary Kane of Albany, New York, and had eleven children. William C. Gibbs died on February 24, 1871.
