Historical note

Laurence Edward Tilley was born in Providence, Rhode Island on January 2, 1899 and died on January 23, 1999. He left Providence to pursue his career in 1923 and married Mildred Cornelius in 1934. The couple moved back to Providence in 1947 and Tilley developed a photography business as an industrial photographer with his office based in The Arcade.

Little is known about this collection of photographs or when they were donated to the Providence Public Library as no acquisition record has been maintained. While not all of the photographs are identified as Tilley’s work, the photographs were found organized together. It is presumed that all of the images were taken by Tilley, but that is unable to be fully confirmed.
