Series 24. Physicians and lawyers for national drug policy (PLNDP)
Box 19-22
This is the first attempt since drug prohibition to enlist the leadership of medicine to work actively to advocate for medical approaches to the nation’s drug abuse problems. The summary of the project in the green booklet pretty much tells the story. During its tenure and in part due to our efforts the federal policy began to change and the public opinion shifted toward treatment versus incarceration for addiction. While the PLNDP was strengthened by the incorporation of lawyers and judges, major funding from foundations - RWJF and MacArthur ended so our most potent outreach ended. However, the audiovisual products are still used and are a benchmark of a fundamental shift in public opinion on the addiction issue.
