Fernando Birri Archive of Multimedia Arts - Escritos (Ms.2010.050.escritos)

This is Subgroup 1: Escritos and contains correspondence, manuscripts, poetry, essays, and screenplays created and collected by Fernando Birri. Birri organized his files, photographs, documents, and films in broad categories. He created the system based on how he worked and the major projects that occupied his time. He was not always consistent in the way he applied the categories to items and many naturally belong to many different categories. He chose the one most applicable. To see all the materials related to a particular topic, film, or art project the researcher is advised to consult each of the 4 Subgroups. See the Arrangement page to get an overview of his classification scheme and links to each Subgroup. In addition to being a filmmaker, Birri is also an artist, writer, poet, and educator. The materials within Escritos reflect all aspects of his work. For example, to see poetry written by Birri consult Series E1.1: Poéticos. For information about Birri as an educator look in Series E1.5 Didácticos, Series E2.5 Didácticos, and Series E3.5 Didácticos. The majority of information specifically about the creation of his films is in Series FE: Escritos Fílmicos but there is also information about his films scattered throughout Series C: Correspondencia and Series E4: Prensa y Difusión. Twelve of the Series are empty because no items were included with the materials sent to Brown University by Birri. The empty series are identified with the word "NONE." C: Correspondencia - This is arranged chronologically and contains all types of correspondence with colleagues, friends, and family. The letters date from 1981-2008 with just 2 items from the 1940s. The contents and titles of the folders are as Birri arranged them and titled them. FFB: Fundación Fernando Birri – These materials document the formation and activities of La Fundación Fernando Birri de Artes Multimediales located in Santa Fe, Argentina. The mission of the foundation is to collect, organize, preserve, and disseminate the work of Fernando Birri and all other artists that contributed to the birth, growth, and consolidation of the Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano. The foundation also seeks to support the creation of new art works in all forms of art (film, video, theatre, literature, music, painting) including new forms that have not yet been invented.
