Scope & content
Stanton Peele is a renowned psychologist and addiction expert, and one of the first to reject the disease theory of alcoholism and offer alternatives to the 12 step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. His papers, donated to Brown university by his daughter Haley Peele, include professional and scholarly correspondence, research materials on addiction and social-psychology, notes and papers from his undergraduate and graduate career at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan, as well as drafts of his first book Love and Addiction.

Biographical note
Stanton Peele was bron on January 8, 1946. He received a B.A. in political science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967, a PhD. in social psychology from the University of Michigan in 1973, and a law degree from Rutgers University in 1997.
Dr. Peele is best known for rejecting the disease theory of alcoholism and offering alternatives to the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. He argues that addictions are negative patterns of behavior that most people experience to some degree during their lives. He views addiction not as a medical problem but as a problem of life that most people overcome.
In 1975, his book,
Love and Addiction was published.
