Scope & content
This collection includes the correspondence of Jenine Bates Greenough and of her father, William Bates. Notable correspondents include Horace Mann, Edward Everett (governor of Massachusetts, 1835-1839) and Edward Dickinson (father of Emily Dickenson). The bulk of Greenough’s letters reflect the thirty years she spent in Ashley Falls, Massachusetts, giving a portrait of the life of a scholarly woman in a small New England town. These letters are intended to compliment the Emily Dickinson collection.
