Hugo Chávez was elected president of Venezuela on 6 December 1998. During his first year in office he proposed a new constitution for Venezuela which was ratified during a popular referendum on 15 December 1999 and called the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.Access & Use
