Biographical / Historical
Virginia Held received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1968 after receiving her bachelor's degree from Barnard College. She became a lecturer at Hunter College in 1965 and then Assistant Professor in 1969. In 1973 she entered a tenured position at City University of New York and earned full professorship in 1977. She has been Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the City University of New York Graduate School since 1996. Held is most well known for her book "The Ethics of Care: Personal, Political, and Global" (2006) and her contributions to the field of ethics and social and political philosophy.
