Abstract:	The Brazilian Studies Association (BRASA), founded in 1992, is an international, interdisciplinary group of scholars who support and promote Brazilian studies in all fields, especially in the humanities and social sciences. BRASA is dedicated to the promotion of Brazilian studies around the world in general, and in the United States in particular. This collection contains the records of the organization and include Executive Committee Meeting materials and documentation on the planning and content of the biennial international conferences held by BRASA since 1994

Scope & content

This collection contains the records of BRASA which document its work to support and promote Brazilian studies in all fields, especially in the humanities and social sciences. The major work of the organization is to hold biennial Conferences for the purpose of presenting scholarly research and discussing issues pertinent to Brazil and Brazilian studies. As a result, most of the records in this collection pertain to the planning and content of the Conferences. Also included is documentation of the Executive Committee meetings and the examples of the Brazil Digest which is a summary of summary of information related to Brazilian Studies focusing on announcements for lectures, congresses, book releases and job opportunities.

Historical note

The Brazilan Studies Association (BRASA) was formally launched during the 1992 Conference of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) in Los Angeles, California. At that meeting some thirty to forty scholars came together and resolved to form an association that would both promote Brazilian studies and continue to build strong links between those who study Brazil and other parts of Latin America.

The First International Conference (BRASA I) was held in Atlanta, Georgia in conjunction with LASA in March 1994. A constitution and by-laws were adopted, an Executive Committee elected, and a Secretariat designated at the University of New Mexico. Founding members Jon M. Tolman and Roberto Reis, were elected as the Association’s first President and Vice-President, respectively, and Edward A. Riedinger was elected Secretary. The Secretariat stayed at the University of New Mexico until 2004 when it moved to Vanderbilt University. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign was the home for the Secretariat during 2011-2015 and it will be at Brown University from 2015 until 2020.
