Biographical/Historical note

Carole Pateman was born on December 11, 1940 in Maresfield, England. She was accepted to Ruskin College of Oxford University in 1963 where she studied economics, politics, history, and sociology. She was the only woman to sit for the Oxford University Post-Graduate Diploma in Political Science and Economics in 1965. She obtained her BA in politics, philosophy and economics in 1967 and her PhD in 1971, both from Oxford University. She holds honorary doctorates from the Australian National University, the National University of Ireland, and Helsinki University. She is also a fellow of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences (1980), the American Academy for Arts and Sciences (1996), and the British Academy (2007). Pateman was the inaugural holder of the Kirsten Hesselgren Professorship of the Swedish Council for Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences from 1988-1989, and from 1993-2000 was an Adjunct Professor at the Research School of Social Sciences at Australian National University. She was the first woman President of the International Political Science Association during 1991-1994. She joined the Department of Political Science at the University of California in Los Angeles in January 1990 and was a Research Professor at Cardiff University, UK from 2006-2008. Pateman has authored nine books including Basic Income Worldwide: Horizons of Reform, and The Sexual Contract.
