Scope & content
The collection consists of fifteen boxes of material deeded to Brown University by Malcolm Lovell, Jr. in 1994. In addition to these materials, there also exists a separate Lovell Family Papers Collection which covers earlier generations of the Lovell family.
The collection includes both the personal files and the work files of Malcolm R. Lovell, Sr.
Personal files included such items as records from his days as a student at both the Lawrenceville School and Brown University. Included among these files are examples of his school work and large amounts of correspondence to his mother. Also included in these personal papers in a sub series of correspondence which Lovell apparently maintained seperately from his work files, which also contain correspondence. A transcription of his work diary spanning his years as Under Secretary of Labor (1980-1983) is also included in Series 2. Subseries E. Diary. The original audio recordings of his diary are maintained in the collection in Series 7. Audio Visual Materials.
The bulk of the collection is the work files generated by Lovell during the course of his thirty year career in the field of labor. Ranging from his earliest employment in Michigan state government to his most recent positions as visiting scholar and lecturer, the collection includes a wide variety of material, including correspondence, personal notes, testimony and speeches given, clippings, and calendar and appointments.
A seperate series of photographs contains numerous images of Lovell, mostly from his employment in the U.S. Department of Labor (1970-1973, 1980-1983).
Tax returns originally included in this collection have been returned to Mr. Lovell, at his request.
A small amount of family papers are included at the beginning of the collection; this record series measures approximately one linear foot.
