Scope & content
The Lord collection consists of approximately 130 letters, autographs, and other items for the period 1778-1908. Nothing is known about Rev. Lord's collecting activities or rationale, particularly his specific interest in autographs. Most of the letters in the collection are from members of Congress. Many of these are directed to Henry C. Bowen, and some are addressed to other residents of Providence. Evidence on many of the items suggests that the collection was once mounted in a scrapbook, but no documentation of the original scrapbook order of the items survives.Access Points

Biographical note
Augustus Mendon Lord was a Unitarian clergyman. Born in 1861, he attended Harvard, from which he graduated as a member of the Class of 1883, for which he wrote the Class Day ode. He went on to serve as minister at the Congregational Parish Church (Unitarian) of Arlington, Massachusetts, from 1887-1890, and later at the First Unitarian Church of Providence from 1890 to 1941. His first publication was A Book of Verses, printed privately in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1886. A number of his sermons were later published, and he also authored The Touch of Nature, published in 1904 by the American Unitarian Association (now known as The Beacon Press) in Boston. In 1929, Rev. Lord was awarded an honorary degree from Brown University. He died in Providence on September 14, 1941, and is buried at Swan Point Cemetery.Access & Use
