Biographical/Historical Note

Robert O. Schulze was dean of the College from 1964 to 1969. During those years, when students and administrators clashed on campuses nationwide, a Brown Daily Herald headline proclaimed Schulze "The Good Dean." He joined the Brown faculty in 1955 as an instructor of sociology, specializing in historical and political sociology. He left Brown to design and direct the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship program, which funds independent study overeas. He later served as dean of the college of arts and sciences at the University of Northern Colorado, retiring in 1987. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in New Guinea, New Britain, the Philipines, and Japan before he was discharged as a warrant officer.
