Biographical/Historical Note

Lyman "Bill" Gustave Bloomingdale (August 18, 1912 - January 28 1999), was a financier and business executive. Grandson of the founder of Bloomingdale's department store, he served as vice president of Bloomingdale Properties and was associated with a variety of New York investment banks.

A member of Brown's class of 1935, Mr. Bloomingdale served as a Navy lieutenant in World War II. He saw action in the North African invasion and in the Pacific invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

Mr. Bloomingdale was an active and loyal Brown alumnus. From 1953 to 1960 he served as a Brown trustee. He was a generous benefactor, establishing the Lyman G. Bloomingdale scholarship. A long-standing member of Brown's Development Council, Mr. Bloomingdale took special interest in Andrews House, was the chair of the building committee for the Rockefeller Library and was a member of the building committee for the Science Library. He also donated several collections to the library, including the John Buchan Collection, the writings of Ernest Hemingway, and the lithographic art of Stow Wengenroth.

Access to the collection:	There are no restrictions on access, except that the collection can only be seen by prior appointment. Some materials may be stored off-site and cannot be produced on the same day on which they are requested.
