Biographical/Historical Note

Following the 1948 presidential election, twenty Rhode Island women who were Brown University alumnae gathered at the home of Hazel Daily to consider forming a club for college women. Then-dean of Pembroke College, the women's college in Brown University, Margaret Shove Morriss and class secretary, Grace McConnell, attended the meeting to emphasize the meaning of having a club. The Pembroke Club of Kent County was born out of this gathering. Since its inception, Club members have hosted and attended regular meetings, lectures, and fundraising events. Today they operate under a different name, the Brown Alumnae Club of Kent County, likely as a result of the Pembroke-Brown merger in 1971.

The Club remained very active until approximately 2015. As of the writing of this finding aid in 2019, Club leadership is concluding activities with anticipation that the Club will cease in the near future.
