Scope & content

The Samuel T. Arnold files consist of records related primarily to his role as Dean of the College and Dean of the University. The bulk of these materials derive from the latter position, which he occupied from 1946 until his death in 1956. In addition, the collection includes some limited materials connected to work outside of the University, including his role as president of the Association of Naval ROTC Colleges.

Series I-III, IX, and X consist of topical files organized in chronological groupings. These series are broad in scope and cover the full range of Arnold's responsibilities and interests over the course of his tenure. Each of the series includes materials related to alumni and faculty issues, academic departments, as well as Arnold's service on various committees and associations. Veterans administration can be found in each of the series, with series IX containing the most extensive coverage. There is quite a bit of overlap across the four series.

The miscellaneous series, series IV, contains extensive documentation of Arnold's participation on the Committee on Dramatic Production, as well as student groups and organizations. The remaining series describe larger topics including commencement, Navy ROTC administration, and campus fraternities.
