The Edgar J. Lanpher files contain administrative records from his term as Assistant Dean of Undergraduates at Brown University. The files cover the academic years 1936/1937 through 1938/1939.

The files are arranged in three chronological series: Series I, 1936/1937; Series II, 1937/1938; Series III, 1938/1939. Each series includes general files of alphabetically arranged material; in addition, Series II and III contain files devoted to specific subjects such as fraternities, Sock and Buskin Theater, and various student associations and organizations.

Biographical note

For forty-six years, from his matriculation in 1915 to the date of his death, Edgar Lanpher was continuously associated with the University he loved. During his time at Brown, Lanpher was a member of the fraternity Alpha Delta Phi, the football team, and the swimming team.

Lanpher's undergraduate career was interrupted in 1918 by service in the army during World War I. Following his military service, he returned to Brown to complete his studies,receiving the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1919. Three years later, he was awarded the LL.B. degree by Harvard University, and in 1923 he entered the Providence law firm of Greenough, Lyman and Cross. In 1931, he became a partner in the firm. He resigned in 1936 to accept an appointment as Assistant Dean of Undergraduates at Brown. In 1942, a few months after the entry of the United States into World War II, Lanpher entered the Air Corps as a volunteer with the rank of Captain; he was discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1945. He returned to his law firm and continued his association there until his death on March 1, 1961. (Alumni file)
