Scope & content
The Malcolm S. Stevens papers The Malcolm S. Stevens papers include correspondence, subject files and materials related to the Campus Planning Committee and Physical Sciences Council at Brown University, where Stevens was the Vice President of Administration from 1966 to 1975. They have been arranged into the following five series:
Series I. Outgoing correspondence contains correspondence sent by Stevens from 1962 and 1978. It is arranged by date.
Series II. Alphabetical file contains material on topics such as the relations between Brown University and the surrounding community, safety codes, the acqusition of property by Brown, the Planning and Building Committee, Naval sciences, tuition and zoning. This material is dated from 1962 and 1975.
Series III. Campus planning consists mostly of correspondence and minutes of the Campus Planning Committee. It also includes material regarding housing and the performing arts at Brown. This material is dated from 1968 to 1978.
Series IV. Physical Sciences Council contains minutes, memoranda and other materials from the Physical Sciences Council at Brown. It is dated from 1953 to 1969.
Series V. Brown University Administrative manual comprises the 1968 edition of this manual.

The Malcolm S. Stevens papers have been organized into five series: I. Outgoing correspondence; II. Alphabetical file; III. Campus planning; IV. Physical Sciences Council; V. Brown University Administrative Manual.
Biographical note
Malcolm S. Stevens (1912-1996) earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) in 1934. He then joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Reserve as a second lieutenant. He worked as a Civil Engineer for three years on the Panama Canal before returning to M.I.T. to join the research administration. During World War II, Stevens served with the Corps of Engineers in the European Theater of Operations. Stevens came to Brown in 1962 as assistant to the provost and coordinator of research. From 1966 until his retirement in 1975, he served as Vice President of Administration. He supervised planning for the University's physical growth, health services, and safety in athletics and physical education.
