Biographical note
F. (Friend) Morris Cochran was born in Saint Marys, West Virginia, in 1897. He graduated from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, in 1919. From 1919 to 1920 he was the Registrar of Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia, where he became the business manager in 1926. Albion College in Albion, Michigan, appointed Cochran its business manager in 1929, a position he held until 1945 when he was appointed to the newly created post of business manager at Brown University in Provicence, Rhode Island. In 1946 he was appointed a VIce President with responsibility for all the business operations of the University, including administration of the budget, accounting, buildings and grounds, purchasing and dining services. Cochran held this post until leaving Brown in 1967.
Cochran was awarded an honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree by Albion College. He served as the President of the Educational Buyers Association in 1936, was Director of Educational and Institutional Service, Inc. from 1942 to 1945, and was a member of the Advisory Editorial Committee for the publication Accounting Manual for Colleges. He was the author of numerous articles on college management and served as a technical advisor in 1943 for the United States Army Air Forces.
Cochran and his wife Margaret Speicher Cochran were the parents of two children, Charles Morris Cochran and Barbara Ann Cochran. Cochran passed away in 1983.
