Scope & content

Photographs, negatives, contact sheets, and slides document the faculty, their works of art, exhibitions, receptions, and studios. Arranged by individual, the bulk of the photographs and negatives record the faculty's activities, both academic and professional, during the post-World War Two era. Many of the images were taken by RISD's Anthony F. Petrillo during the 1950s and 1960s for the Alumni Bulletin. The Works of Art series includes numerous photographs taken for RISD: The Faculty (Providence: RISD, Museum of Art, 1984), an exhibition catalogue. Photographs and negatives are stored separately.

Historical note

The Rhode Island School of Design Faculty originally comprised the RISD Director, the Department heads (Freehand Drawing and Painting; Decorative Design; Architecture; Mechanical Engineering; Modeling and Sculpture; and Children's Dept.), and the registrar as Secretary of the Faculty (1901-1934). At the request of faculty and instructors, the structure of the faculty was modified in 1934 to include all members of the teaching staff.
