Anna Tirocchi and Laura Tirocchi immigrated from Guarcino, Italy to the United States in 1905 and in 1910 they were living in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1911, they opened their dressmaking business, A and L Tirocchi, in the Butler Exchange in downtown Providence. In 1915, after Laura married physician Louis J. Cella, they purchased a mansion at 514 Broadway, where their dressmaking business took place on the second floor and the third floor held their workshop. They maintained their dressmaking business for over thirty years, making fashionable clothing for wealthy clients. For more information, refer to the catalog From Paris to Providence: Fashion, Art, and the Tirocchi Dressmakers' Shop, 1915-1947 by Susan Hay.

Subseries II. Vendor Financial Records
: A variety of accounting systems appear to have been used in keeping the business books. Detailed information has been recorded in ledgers, inventories, and day books. Vendor account books are quite detailed until 1932, only minimal journal entries are posted after that date and the volumes were labelled as 'Merchandise Bill Book'.

Day books contain expenses and income for business activities including rental properties and for household expenses. These are identified.

Some vendor address books have commentary.
