Biographical/Historical Note
In response to comments from faculty, students, and friends of the college, former RIC President Dr. Charles B. Willard called on a committee in 1973 to review athletic policies for intercollegiate and intramural sports. The committee members included Dr. Thomas Lavery, director of part-time programs, Dixon McCool, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, and Helen Murphy, Assistant Professor at the Henry Barnard School. Their areas of focus included intramural athletics, women's intercollegiates, men's minor sports, recruitment, long road trips, and development of standards. Most notably, they resolved to increase their commitment to women’s athletics through financing, scholarships, awards, and publicity. They also recommended changing the Athletic Director’s responsibilities to fit an administrative role.
