Biographical/Historical Note
Mark Estrin was born in New York City and graduated from Amherst College in 1959. He then went on to receive a Master’s Degree in English from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from New York University. From 1962-1964, Estrin served as a part-time lecturer at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, and as a lecturer at Brooklyn College from 1963-1966. Estrin was later a professor of English at Rhode Island College, and chaired the department from 1970-1976. He then co-founded the Film Studies Program at RIC and served as the Program’s director from 1976-1993. Estrin died in 2002. The Mark Estrin Film Studies Award at RIC is named in his honor.
Estrin was an author and reviewer, writing articles on film and dramatic literature and served as a reviewer for Choice. His edited works include Conversations with Eugene O’Neill, Critical Essays on Lillian Hellman, and Orson Welles Interviews.
