Biographical/Historical Note

Ambrosius Holbein (1494-1519) was a German painter, drawer, and printmaker and his brother, Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/8-1534), was a sixteenth century portraitist. Their father was Hans Holbein the Elder (c. 1460-1524), and their uncle was Sigmund Holbein, who died in 1540.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION  
Acquisition: The collection was likely donated by Martha Bacon Ballinger and Ronald Ballinger in the 1980s as part of the Bacon and Hazard family collections. It was separated from those collections prior to 2019.
Processing information: The collection was described by Special Collections intern, Melissa Moniz, in 2023 under the supervision of Digital Archivist and Special Collections Librarian, Veronica L. Denison. Further information regarding item 1 in the collection was provided by Rhode Island College students Devine Ross, James Pastore, Julia Pepin, and Gleny Vargas Melo during their First Year Seminar class “Raid the Collections,” taught by Professor Amy Barlow, in 2024.
