This series contains records documenting the religious, administrative, social, and cultural activities of St. John's Episcopal Church in Barrington, Rhode Island. Topics include the annual meetings of the parish corporation, parish clubs and organizations such as the Altar Guild, the St. John's Church School Association, the St. Andrew's Club and the William M. Chapin Guild, church services, pew rentals, the budget, and fundraising.

The types of records include annual reports, agenda and minutes of meetings, church publications and brochures, and a pew rental record book. The pew rental record book is particularly significant in that it dates from the inception of St. John's and provides a comprehensive list of the parish's founding and early members.

Series 2. The Tower

This series contains issues of St. John's monthly newsletter, The Tower. Although scattered issues are missing, the series contains a comprehensive run of the newsletter over a forty-five year period.

Series 3. The Encore Shop
Box 19-22, Folder 1-28
This series consists of records which document the financial activities of the Encore Shop, the parish's consignment store. Included are bills and receipts, check registers, sales and use tax returns, bank statements and treasurer's reports.

Series 4. Women's Auxiliary
Box 23-25, Folder 1-13
This series documents the activities and special projects of the St. John's branch of the Woman's Auxiliary, now known as the Episcopal Church Women. Topics include the United Thank Offering, organization meetings, special programs and projects, the war effort (World War II), and the Junior Auxiliary. The types of records include annual reports, minutes of meetings, membership lists, project reports, a committee notebook, correspondence, and brochures.

Series 5. Blueprints and Maps

This series consists of blueprints of St. John's Church, landscape drawings of church property, and maps of Barrington.

Arrangement:

The blueprints and maps are arranged alphabetically by the name of the area or the building depicted. Oversized maps and blueprints are housed separately in folio boxes.

Series 6. Rev. Daryl Stahl's Personal Papers
Box 27-30, Folder 1-37
This series contains the personal papers of the parish rector, the Rev. Daryl Stahl. The records pre-date Stahl's appointment as rector of St. John's and document his service as associate pastor of St. Mark's Church in New Britain, Connecticut. Included are records relating to procedures for marriage encounters and counseling sessions, publications and reference materials relating to Planned Parenthood, the ordination of women, and meetings of the St. Mark's Worship Committee.

Series 7. Photographs
Box 31, Folder 1-21
This series contains photographs of people, places, and events significant to the history of St. John's Church. Included are photographs of parish social events such as picnics, cookouts, dances and ski trips, photographs of former rectors, including William Chapin, Richard Mortimer-Maddox, W. Owings Stone and Dudley Tyng, and photographs of the interior and exterior of St. John's Church.

The photographs are arranged alphabetically by the name of the person, place, or event depicted and chronologically within folders.

Series 8. Registers
Box 32, Folder 1-7
The Register Series contains bound Registers of Church Services for the years 1920-25 and 1945-58 and bound Parish Registers of baptisms, burials, confirmations and marriages for the years 1858 to 1971.

The Registers of Church Services include the date, time, type of service, number of attendees, and the name of the celebrant for each service held in the parish. The volumes are arranged chronologically by the date of the service.

The Parish Registers are divided into sections by the type of service performed, i.e., baptisms, burials, confirmations and marriages. The type and extent of information recorded varies with the type of service. For baptisms it includes the date of the ceremony, the name and date of birth of the person baptized, the name of his/her parents, and the name of the officiating clergy. The marriage records include the date of the ceremony, the names and ages of the betrothed, their residence(s), the names of their parents, and the name of the presiding clergy. Confirmation records include the dates and names of those confirmed and the name of the bishop presiding over the ceremony. Burial records include the name of the deceased, the date of death, the cause of death, the age at death, the date of the funeral, the place of burial, and the name of the clergy presiding at the funeral.

The registers are arranged alphabetically by type of register and then chronologically by the inclusive dates of each register.

Series 9. Vestry
Box 33-35, Folder 1-22
This series contains records relating to the activities of the parish vestry, the group of parishioners elected annually to administer the secular affairs of the parish. Included are agenda and minutes of meetings of the vestry and the annual parish meetings, correspondence, and reports.

The minutes of the meetings of the vestry document founding of the parish in 1858 and trace its growth and development over the following 125 years.

Series 10. Financial Documents
This series contains receipts and invoices, accounting information, various bills from the church, and report from church groups (such as the Treasurer).
