Scope & content
The collection principally consists of the inactive records of the parish, though some of Rev. Stahl's personal papers from previous assignments are also included. The records date from the founding of the parish in 1858 and document the administrative, religious, cultural, and financial activities of St. John's Church.

Historical Information
St. John's Church dates its founding to May 1858, when a small group of Episcopalians in
Barrington gathered in the town's train depot to hold services and to organize themselves into a parish.
By September, a parish was formally organized, a constitution adopted, a vestry elected, and ground broken for the construction of a brick church. In December, the Rev.
Francis J. Warner was chosen rector and the first service was held in the newly completed church on January 12, 1859. St. John's has remained a fixture in the center of Barrington since then, an integral part of the religious, cultural, and social life of the community.

This series contains records documenting the religious, administrative, social, and cultural activities of St. John's Episcopal Church in Barrington, Rhode Island. Topics include the annual meetings of the parish corporation, parish clubs and organizations such as the Altar Guild, the St. John's Church School Association, the St. Andrew's Club and the William M. Chapin Guild, church services, pew rentals, the budget, and fundraising.
The types of records include annual reports, agenda and minutes of meetings, church publications and brochures, and a pew rental record book. The pew rental record book is particularly significant in that it dates from the inception of St. John's and provides a comprehensive list of the parish's founding and early members.

The Register Series contains bound Registers of Church Services for the years 1920-25 and 1945-58 and bound Parish Registers of baptisms, burials, confirmations and marriages for the years 1858 to 1971.
The Registers of Church Services include the date, time, type of service, number of attendees, and the name of the celebrant for each service held in the parish. The volumes are arranged chronologically by the date of the service.
The Parish Registers are divided into sections by the type of service performed, i.e., baptisms, burials, confirmations and marriages. The type and extent of information recorded varies with the type of service. For baptisms it includes the date of the ceremony, the name and date of birth of the person baptized, the name of his/her parents, and the name of the officiating clergy. The marriage records include the date of the ceremony, the names and ages of the betrothed, their residence(s), the names of their parents, and the name of the presiding clergy. Confirmation records include the dates and names of those confirmed and the name of the bishop presiding over the ceremony. Burial records include the name of the deceased, the date of death, the cause of death, the age at death, the date of the funeral, the place of burial, and the name of the clergy presiding at the funeral.

The registers are arranged alphabetically by type of register and then chronologically by the inclusive dates of each register.
