Scope & content

The records of the CRC were gathered from different offices and in different locations, file cabinets and storage areas. There was no discernible or sensible order to the various records. The current order of series and subjects has been imposed by the archivists and reflects the activities and functions of the organization. The content of the records and folder titles resulted in the headings used. Headings are divided from subheadings by a colon. Published works and titles come after the heading and subheading in quotation marks. Publications, therefore, are listed under subject covered, often derived from the title. Folder contents are arranged in chronological order by date the document was produced.

The records were received in good shape. There is no water damage, brittleness or other mutilation. There are no restrictions on the use of these records.

After processing the records were organized into six series:

Series one, Subject Files, 1865-[1974-85]-1990, is the largest series and contains records covering a variety of topics and information of interest to the CRC. Also included is out-of-state research information furnished by other organizations. Types of records include publications, research data, brochures, schedules, notes, minutes, maps, transparencies, invoices, reports.

Series two, Administrative Files, 1972-1988, contains records generated by or relevant to the internal functioning and operations of the CRC. Types of records include correspondence, inter-office memos, budget reports, resumes, letters, meeting notes, and workshop schedules.

Series three, Salt Ponds Studies, 1949-[1977-85]-1990, contains records related to the studies of the Salt Ponds and coastal lagoons located along the southern coast of Rhode Island. Types of records include research data and statistics, published reports, drafts, correspondence, newspaper clippings and photographs.

Series four, Narragansett Bay Studies, 1931-[1973-86]-1990, contains records related to studies of Narragansett Bay and the surrounding areas. Types of records include research data and statistics, published reports, drafts, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and photographs.

Series five, Energy Studies, 1969-1983, contains records related to energy studies, mainly those performed on Georges Bank. Topics addressed concern energy alternatives, environmental impact and different fuels. Types of records include research data and statistics, published reports, drafts, correspondence, newspaper clippings and photographs.

Series six, Various Studies, 1918-[1974-85]-1990, contains records of Rhode Island Studies that do not fall under any of the above series. Water quality management, estuaries, wetlands, and fisheries are prominent. Types of records include research data and statistics, published reports, drafts, correspondence, newspaper clippings and photographs.
