Scope & content

The records of the University of Rhode Island Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) were donated to the URI Library in the summer of 1996. The idea of archiving the Association's historical records dates back until at least 1973 when the motion was defeated in a vote before the Executive Committee. In academic year 1995/96 current Executive Director, Suzanne Taylor, brought forward the idea as part of the organization's twenty fifth anniversary; at this point the Committee sanctioned the project. Records of the Association were transferred to the University Archives from the AAUP offices in Roosevelt Hall where they had been stored in closets and file cabinet since at least 1971. In the planning phase of this project, the Executive Director and University Archivist, in consultation with the Executive Committee, decided that all records from the earliest date up to, and including, 1990 would be transferred to the archive through a deed of gift which was presented to the Committee on the 26th of August 1996. Because the Association is still an active entity, records from 1991 forward are kept at the AAUP office. An exception to this appears in the grievance series. Four grievance cases from 1990 are included in this archive; other grievances from 1990, if there are any, remain at the AAUP office.

The Association's history from 1931 through 1944 is missing and only sketchy information is available from 1945 through 1970. Records from 1971, when the organization became a bargaining unit, through 1990 provide a detailed picture of the operation of the Association through the years. This collection is broken into eleven series and some of the series are divided into subseries.

Series I, General Subject File, 1954-1990, consists of material relating to the administration and operation of the URI chapter of the AAUP. Included in this series are correspondence, minutes, newsletters, faculty attitude surveys, and other records that provide in-depth information regarding the operations and activities of the Association. Series II, Executive Committee Files, 1954-1990, is comprised primarily of minutes and agenda from Executive Committee meetings, these files date back to 1957. The files that round out this series are comprised of correspondence to and from the Executive Committee dating back to 1954.

Series III, Correspondence of Presidents, 1961-1990, documents the daily activities of the chapter president of the AAUP, beginning with the correspondence of President William Haller (1962-1963) and continuing through the presidency of Wendy Roworth (1989-1990). Although the Association has had a presence at this school since 1931, there is no separate record of presidential correspondence pre dating Haller's term in office. The president's correspondence is sporadic from Haller's term through that of Roderick Caldwell (1971-1972). From President Scott Desjardins' term (1972-1973) through Wendy Roworth's presidency, record keeping of correspondence has been more completely maintained by the AAUP office.

Series IV, Correspondence of the Executive Secretary/Director, 1975-1991, like that of the Correspondence of Presidents, is distinguished by its paucity of records. The series contains just three quarters of a linear foot of material. Sixty percent of the material in this series is files containing the correspondence of Executive Secretary Edward Marth (1975-1986). Reflecting a difference in style, Marth's successor Rachel Grenier chose to have most of her correspondence integrated into the files to which the action related. Subsequently, just five folders in this series contain Grenier's writings. For the bulk of her correspondence, one must use the other series in this archive.

Series V, All University Collective Bargaining Committee (AUCBC), 1972-1990, contains records pertaining to the actions of the Collective Bargaining Committees. The committees are charged by the Association's constitution with the mission of "establishing the policies and procedures relating to resumed contract negotiations" and are also charged with naming the new Negotiating Team. This series consists of minutes, proposals, agreements, articles and other files that were relevant to each individual AUCBC.

Series VI: Negotiations 1962-1990. The Negotiating Team is appointed by the AUCBC. Files generated by these teams include salary agreements, legal actions, memorandums of agreement, proposals and other files. Records in this series provide insight about the activities of the faculty's negotiators as well as that of the Administration's team. A useful document is the 1972-1990 contract listing (folder 6) which provides a concise overview of each contract period, the salary increase, Exceptional Salary Increase (ESI) and merit increases.

Series VII: Strike 1970-1980 Files in this series include: Newspaper clippings of the strike wad subsequent fallout; depositions from the resulting arbitration; faculty attitude surveys from 1977 and 1978; pay for work grievances filed by faculty members not paid during the strike days; a faculty attendance roster which lists who reported for work during the strike, other relevant material is also included. The faculty strike in 1979 was an important event in the history of the AAUP and the University as well. Not before, and not since, have negotiations broken down so completely as to precipitate this type of job action.

Series VIII: Financial Material 1945-1990. This series is broken into four subseries: General Financial Material; Statements, Account Books & Canceled Checks; Salary; Service Fee and Membership Registers. The General Financial Material is comprised of treasurer's reports, vouchers, invoices, receipts and disbursements from 1956-1957 through 1989-1990. Subseries AA: Statements, Account Books & Canceled Checks contains all of the above documents from 1945 through 1973.

Subseries B: Salary is a collection of computer reports gathered by the Association in its early campaign for salary equity. Subseries C: Service Fee and Membership Registers is a collection of registers from 1972 through 1990 documenting the dollar amount paid by each faculty member of the university faculty for membership in the Association (voluntary) and a service fee paid by each faculty member to the AAUP for its role as bargaining agent (mandatory).

Series IX: Grievance 1972-1990. Material in the grievance is organized alphabetically by the grievant's last name. In the case of an individual having filed more than one grievance, the collection is sorted chronologically. Included in this series are four hundred sixty eight grievances filed between 1972 and 1990. The files in this series are broken into two series which comprise the largest component of the processed collection. The main component of this series contains four hundred forty five individual grievances. Subseries A: Class Grievances contains twenty three class grievances. Restriction will apply to this series. Access to the grievances is restricted. Permission to research materials in this series must be obtained from the AAUP and the Archivist.

Series X: Women's Inequities Class Action Suit, 1972-1987, contains records related to the suit filed on behalf of female faculty members who claimed a systematic process of discrimination based on sex. Material from the class action suit accounts for forty four linear feet of processed material. Records in this series are broken into the following groups:

Subseries A: Documentation of the case; interrogatories, motions, pleadings and other legal documents.

Subseries B: Individual Files; information from and about the various individuals involved in the class action suit.

Subseries C: Department Files; as a part of the case university departments were called on to provide information regarding potential discrimination.

Subseries D: Subject Files; records of correspondence, analyses and background legal cases.

Subseries E: Affirmative Action/ Equal Opportunity (AA/EEOP); department, college and university AA/EEOP plans and evaluations.

Subseries F: Searches; the original creators of these files set aside some files of departmental and university personnel searches. Additional searches can be found interspersed with department files in Subseries C.

Subseries G: Brown University; this is a similar case which occurred at Brown University.

Subseries H: Computer Printouts; a diverse set (of data noting various demographic characteristics of the faculty over the course of the class action suit.

Series XI, Executive Secretary/Director Search, 1975-1987, contains records pertaining to the two national searches for Executive Secretary in 1975 and 1987. The position of Executive Secretary was re designated as Executive Director under Rachel Grenier. This series contains applications for the position advertisements, search committee rosters, minutes and offers made.

Those wishing additional information concerning the AAUP chapter at the University of Rhode Island may wish to consult sources in the University Library. The Special Collections department houses many collections that provide worthwhile adjunct information about the association. The Directory of Staff Members, published continually since 1942, allows researchers to cross reference members of the Association with their departments and positions held. A collection also exists chronicling the long standing grievance of Professor Garrett Glough. This collection is contained in eight archive boxes and includes tapes of the hearings. In addition to these two sets of records, Special Collections also has a complete set of bound AAUP newsletters. These will prove useful when the reader notices the less than complete file of newsletters in this archive. The papers of the University Presidents may also prove a useful adjunct to this archive. In the library's general collection, the Bulletin of the American Association of University Professors, subsequently renamed Academe, provides insight to the national body as well as information on chapter officers and membership numbers.

Judge Selya's decision on Chang v University of Rhode Island (commonly refer red to as The Class Action Suit) will be of assistance when using the Class Action series of this archive. A monograph, Academics in Court. The Consequences of Faculty Discrimination Litigation, by LaNoue and Lee will provide the researcher with background information on cases similar to the class action suit at the University of Rhode Island.

Historical note

The American Association of University Professors has a rich history dating back to 1913. In this year the Association was created to represent academe's common interests and deal with the problems of university policy. Founding members of the Association saw the organization as kin to the American Bar Association and the American Medical Association. The stated aims of the group were to "facilitate a more effective co operation among the members of the profession in the discharge of their special responsibilities as custodians of the interests of higher education and research in America; to promote a more general and methodical discussion of problems relating to education in higher institutions of learning; to create means for the authoritative expression of the public opinion of college and university teachers; to make collective action possible; and to maintain and advance the standards and ideals of the profession. (1)

Sixteen years after its creation the AAUP arrived on the campus of what was then called Rhode Island State College. According to the Bulletin of the American Association of University Professors, this was the first chapter in the state. In 1931 the local chapter formed with two members: Joseph W Ince of the Chemistry department and Andrew J. Newman, director of the school's placement service and lecturer in public finance. Membership ranged from a high of twelve to a low of two between the 1931 and 1945 (See Appendix 1 - Growth of the Membership). From 1931 to 1941 just two people held the position of chapter president, Joseph W. Ince and Ralph E. Brown from the department of Mechanical Engineering (See Appendix 2 Presidents & Department Affiliation). No mention is made of a chapter president from 1941 through 1945.

The earliest record of the Association on this campus is a treasurer's book which dates from 1945. Other of the Association's records relate the chapter's constant role of watchdog over the Administration's dealings with faculty. A typical example of this oversight appears in a report presented to the Executive Committee in May of 1954. The Committee on Intra-University Relations, reporting on the Administration's dismissal of Professor Frederick Clayton, protested the apparently arbitrary interpretation of the agreements contained in the faculty manual. Other issues such as peer review and salary equity which were touched upon in this report continue to be important topics today.

Correspondence from the 1960s reflects a partnership of sorts between the chapter and the administration benefiting both parties. University President Francis Horn's letter of January 3, 1962 spoke of the Association's request for the construction of a faculty club as part of the ongoing development of the University. Horn stated that after deliberating the matter he agreed with the Association's request and was actively approaching wealthy investors with the intent of raising the required funds. While there are instances of cooperation between the administration and the association, there were also issues that continued to crop up from year to year as problems that eluded resolution by either party. Academic freedom, salary negotiation, termination, appointment of administration officials without faculty input, and tenure were, and are, continually addressed by both parties. There is ample evidence of faculty members approaching the chapter for assistance when issues such as these became too overwhelming for the individual to handle alone.

The singular nature of bargaining was not unique to URI. Across the nation important employment issues facing the professoriate were being addressed by the solitary professor and the Administration. The national body of the AAUP sought to change this inherently unbalanced process and in the mid 1960s began, tentatively, to move toward collective bargaining. This was a difficult decision for the organization in that it had always embraced the idea of faculty as officers and joint custodians sharing authority with the Administration. The notion of collective bargaining seemed to nudge the Association, ever so slightly, away from these concepts. Faced with the prospect of losing membership because it would not embrace collective bargaining, the national body granted interim guidance in 1966 to local chapters authorizing them to seek recognition as bargaining units. By 1971 the AAUP, sensing the empowerment generated by collective bargaining, made the unequivocal statement that it would now pursue collective bargaining as another means of achieving the Association's goals. Still the AAUP disclaimed the moniker of "faculty union."

The Executive Committee of the URI chapter of the AAUP wasted little time exploring the matter. Talks at this level tended toward moving the faculty in the direction of collective bargaining but it appears that the idea itself was to be used as a link in an overall strategy of talks with the Administration. Discussions in September of 1970 reveal the Committee's thoughts that timing was not yet right to push collective bargaining. The issue continued to be addressed however at committee meetings through the end of the year and into 1971. By March the Committee was sure of the timing and moved that "the [chapter] support efforts to undertake collective bargaining with a view to having the AAUP become the collective bargaining unit at URI.”(2) The motion passed and the committee convened a chapter meeting to present the idea to the faculty.

The introduction of collective bargaining to URI was not a new issue for the university community. The New England Director of the AAUP, Matthew Finken, had addressed the Association at its meeting on March 9, 1971. His report on the AAUP's role in collective bargaining sought to strengthen his Association's position as a potential agent for the faculty. To this end Finken promised the chapter one thousand dollars to be applied against legal fees incurred when the chapter received designation as a bargaining agent.

It is clear that the Executive Committee sought the AAUP as bargaining agent, but another organization vied for the role also. The National Education Association (NEA) was also desirous of the role. To ensure that the selection process was both thorough and responsible, the faculty set up two teams, one of which would argue for collective bargaining and the other would argue the case for no collective bargaining. Carr and Van Eyck note that this process generated a great deal of rhetoric but ensured a "reasonably fair and thorough examination of the case step by step."(3) The election's tally was clearly in favor of collective bargaining. After a run-off election between the AAUP and the NEA, the AAUP was declared winner.

During the summer of 1971 the bargaining unit was defined during hearings before the state labor relations board. On December 21, 1971 the AAUP was certified by the board as the exclusive bargaining representative for all URI faculty. The following month the Executive Committee passed a motion authorizing five thousand dollars to be paid to the law firm of Michaelson and Stanzler to represent the faculty through the completion of the first contract. The ensuing negotiations, which began in March of 1972, took seven difficult months, resulting in a two-year contract signed into effect on November 6, 1972.

The AAUP's role of bargaining agent had caused a clear delineation in thinking about the bargaining process. Correspondence to the Executive Committee and the Presidents show that some faculty members wanted nothing to do with the collective bargaining process while others still were excited about the prospect. The chapter newsletter published on January 30, 1976 noted just how strongly the introduction of collective bargaining affected the Administration. Former University President Werner Baum appeared before a Wisconsin legislative committee considering a bill that would permit the introduction of collective bargaining at the University of Wisconsin. Baum, now Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, told legislators that collective bargaining had "destroyed the quality of life at the University of Rhode Island" and that "collective bargaining was the reason [he] left URI."

With rapid change taking place within the Association, and the workload increasing just as quickly, the Executive Committee discussed the option of hiring an Executive Secretary to deal with day-to-day association management. Professor Charles Schmidt was charged with the mission of undertaking a feasibility study and reporting back to the committee with his proposal. Schmidt's report in favor of creating the position was delivered to the committee on September 23, 1974 and ratified by the faculty on the 20th of December. Thirty three candidates applied for the position and after a screening process the field was reduced to: James Elmore, Alan Willsey, Jill Alexander and Edward Marth. In May of 1975 the chapter's immediate past president Robert Gutchen motioned that Marth be offered the position. The committee discussed the matter and after two votes, the motion passed 8 to 1. Ed Marth was offered the position and began work on July 1, 1975.

Since its beginnings as bargaining agent, the AAUP had worked well for the faculty. The chapter gained experience in the process of bargaining and won concessions for its membership. In 1975 Joseph Duffey, General Secretary for the AAUP related that "right now URI is one of the more experienced groups in higher education collective bargaining in America."(4) Duffey also praised the chapter for sending President Gino Silvestri to the University of Massachusetts in an effort to organize the faculty. While the chapter had won compromises from the Administration in many aspects of university life, there were still issues that refused resolution. Percolating under the surface for years was the issue of gender equality. This problem was seemingly brought to a head in 1972 in the form of a grievance filed against the university by Professor Lucy Peng Fei Chang. Chang alleged that the university had practiced unfair labor practices by discriminating against her due to her gender. Her grievance, denied at two levels within the administration, was won at the level of the State Commission on Human Rights only to be overturned in Superior Court. In winning this battle, the Administration divested itself from financial responsibility to Chang and, indirectly at this point, to the needs of female members of the university faculty. The issue lay dormant until 1977 when it returned as a complex class action suit.

Negotiations for the 1979 contact opened in February of 1979. By June 19th the AAUP newsletter reported that "because of the punitive nature of the Regent's proposal and intransigence of their negotiating team, a strike may be unavoidable." Over the next few months the Association communicated constantly with its members about the progress of negotiations, or lack thereof. All the while, contingencies were being drafted in preparation for a strike. Strike workshops were planned, a strike fund was authorized and members of the Association voted 162 to 19 to call a strike if agreeable terms could not be reached through negotiations. Records reflect that the Administration committed a strategic error in their belief that the faculty did not fully support the AAUP's position. On September 4th, the Association sent notice to the Administration of its intention to strike. The following day, faculty staffed picket lines; the strike was on. While there were faculty members that crossed the picket lines, a majority refused to break solidarity with the union or with their associates.

The strike ran through the 19th of the month. Several negotiating sessions over the two week period were fruitless. Newspapers covering the story captured the range of emotions that permeated the strike period. Pictures of angry faculty members shouting at a motorcyclist crossing the picket line, Board of Regents Chief Negotiator Tom McAndrews conferring with a pensive University President Frank Newman, and students rallying in front of the State House, all convey the tension sweeping through every affected party. When negotiations continued to fail, Governor Garrahy intervened in an attempt to bring both sides back to the negotiating table. Members of the AAUP met at the State House with the Governor, Tom McAndrews and former governor Frank Licht in a marathon session lasting eighteen hours. At exactly three o'clock in the morning on the 19th of September both sides shook hands and ended the strike. Although negotiations over several issues continued to be addressed, the school could now return, at least in part, to a semblance of normalcy. The national association's journal Academe noted that the strike at the University of Rhode Island had been the longest in AAUP collective bargaining history.

While the furor of the strike began to subside, the Chang case again flared to life. Chang's case, filed in 1977, sought to represent a class of women who "had been, or could have been, faculty at URI." This case merged with another class action suit (Seleen v. URI) and two separate individual actions filed against the University (Krayack v. URI and Roworth v. URI). In a two-hundred-and-ninety nine page decision handed down by United States District Judge Bruce M. Selya on April 4, 1985, the judge referred to the complexity of the case as a "… winding path so tortuously followed …" He found that the university had "engaged in a pattern of discrimination in derogation of the rights of women faculty" and that this practice had extended perhaps for decades prior to this suit.(5) In its newsletter of April 19, 1985, the Association presented a concise overview of the decision and its ramifications for the University community.

While the judge strongly rebuked the Administration, demanding that changes and restitution be made, he also noted that the Association was not blameless in this matter. Selya's epilog to the case stated that “ … the AAUP and its members seem to have developed a penchant for confrontation, an uncanny ability to see ghosts in the most austere of closets, a self annihilating eagerness to tackle the administration for the sake of battle irrespective of the importance, or insignificance, of the issue or sometimes the merits of the Administration's position."(6)

Selya was, however, explicit in his praise of the University of Rhode Island itself, calling the school "the crown jewel in Rhode Island's coronet of state sponsored higher education." While he found that the school had unfairly discriminated against its female faculty members and the union had also to shoulder its share of blame, Selya believed his judgment would clear the way for the University and its faculty to "walk hand in hand, proudly into a just and equitable future."(7) The judge's idealistic verbiage was countered when the Board of Governors threatened appeal of the decision. Only after continued negotiations did the Board agree to settle the dispute and pay $1,190,000. From these funds $623,250 would be earmarked for distribution to past and present female faculty members who had been under-compensated. The AAUP received $30,000 with which to offset it's expenditures of $51,275 in legal and consulting fees. The process continued to drag on into 1986 when two-hundred-twenty two female faculty members were designated for compensation as a result of Selya's decision.

As the class action suit was coming to an end, Edward Marth accepted a position as Executive Director of the AAUP chapter at the University of Connecticut. The Executive Committee appointed Mort Briggs from the History Department to chair the search committee for Marth's successor. After weeding the field of candidates to five finalists, offers were made to three individuals. In 1987 Rachel Grenier accepted the Association's offer and was named the new Executive Director of the AAUP. During Grenier's tenure, issues of faculty longevity and co affiliation were addressed as were promotion standards and the construction of a local chapter of the AAUP to service part time faculty. An important milestone also took place in the late 1980s when Wendy Roworth was elected to the chapter presidency. Serving the Association from 1989 to 1990, Roworth was the first woman to hold this position in the chapter's fifty eight year history.

The University of Rhode Island chapter of the American Association of University Professors is still an active force on the campus of URI and continues to push its agenda of equality, advocacy and inclusion. The records in this archive reflect the evolution of the chapter, its mission and its members from it's quiet beginnings in Rhode Island in 1931 through its present role as collective voice of the University faculty.

Series 1. General Subject File
The General Subject File consists of material relating to the Administration and operation of the URI chapter of the AAUP. Included are correspondence, minutes, newsletters, faculty attitude surveys and other records which provide information regarding the activities of the Association. While the records contained in this series are diverse, some may be of special interest. Files relating to the Board of Regents (later to be renamed the Board of Governors) occupy eight file folders and range in years from 1973 through 1981. Files relating to the Association's interest in the Administrative budget occupy an additional ten folders.

Another area of interest to the Association is the status of the university faculty. The question of who is a member of the collective bargaining unit, and who is not, has far-reaching implications for the Association, Administration and faculty. An example of this problem is illustrated in the files relating to the Co-Op Extension. Records from 1973 show the Extension staff's interest in union representation. The ongoing discussion lasted through 1987. The results, including a later arbitration, are found in ten files.

Another subset of this series consists of eight folders containing the minutes of the general membership meetings. These collected minutes span thirty four years from 1955 through 1989 and portray the thoughts and actions of the membership over three and one half decades. Other components of the General Subject series include folders on the use of part time faculty, newsletters from the AAUP and university community, by laws from 1973-1974, notes on Agency Shop (1972-1978) and constitution drafts (1954, 1972-1973). The series also contains a folder titled "Pied Piper" which contains copies of an undated newsletter created during the 1980s. This underground newsletter offered the reader a satirical look at the University Administration. The author's acerbic wit spares few in the Administration from the microscope of ridicule.

The records in this series are arranged alphabetically by subject and chronologically within each folder.

Series 2. Executive Committee File
The Executive Committee File series is mainly a collection of minutes from Executive Committee meetings dating back to 1957. The minutes account for approximately 1.25 feet of the series and are held in twenty five folders. The remaining folders in this series contain correspondence to and from the Executive Committee dating back to 1954. Minutes from Committee meetings document the entire spectrum of events which faced the university faculty during the past three and one half decades. Issues such as faculty grievances, merit increases, appointment of Administration officials without faculty input, budgets, negotiations and annual dinners are all well represented within this series. Records in this series contain minutes that portend the coming of important events like the introduction of collective bargaining to the University and the faculty strike of 1979. Also included are records reflecting the every day activities of association management.

This series consists of two primary components; minutes and correspondence. The folders are arranged alphabetically. Correspondence to and from the Executive Committee are arranged chronologically. Committee minutes range from 1957 through 1990 and are also arranged chronologically. There is one folder of assorted articles which were collected by the committee during the years 1981 through 1986.

Series 3. Correspondence of Presidents
One of the two smallest series in the collection, the Correspondence of the Presidents may provide the researcher with information needed to fill gaps found in other series of this archive. Beginning with the correspondence of President William Haller (1962 63) and continuing through the presidency of Wendy Roworth (1989-1990), the series documents the daily activities of this elected office. Although the Association has had a presence at this school since 1931, there is no separate record of presidential correspondence pre dating Haller's term in office. Sporadic correspondence was collected from Haller through Caldwell (1971-1972). Beginning with the Desjardins presidency (1972-1973) and continuing through Roworth, collections of the presidents’ writings have become more systematic and concentrated. These correspondence have been maintained by the AAUP office.

Files in this series provide cognition of the Association and its President. Each presidency has its own idiosyncrasies and these are reflected in the correspondence generated during the term of office. An example of what may be found in this series is brought forward in the letters of George deLodzia. DeLodzia's presidency (1979 80) presents a dichotomy of contentious and cordial correspondence between the Administration and the AMP. Vice President Ferrante, writing to congratulate deLodzia on his recent election, asked for "informal and regular meetings" to ensure clear communications between the union and the Administration. DeLodzia replied seventeen days later by accepting the invitation. At the same time, he charged the Administration with patronage because it employed the wife of the Commissioner of the Board of Regents at "$20,000 +” salary. While individual correspondence from each of the presidents offer a differing view of the office and the social context in which it operated, the series will provide the researcher with information spanning a broad spectrum of events and processes that shaped the union through the decades.

This series is organized chronologically by presidential administration and chronologically within each folder.

Series 4. Correspondence of Executive Secretary/Director
This series, like that of the Correspondence of Presidents, is distinguished by its paucity of records. The series contains just .75 linear feet of material. Sixty percent of the material in this series are files containing the correspondence of Executive Secretary Edward Marth (1975-1986). Reflecting a difference in administrative style, Marth's successor Rachel Grenier chose to have much of her correspondence interfiled with projects they were relevant to. Consequently, just five folders in this series contain Grenier's writings. For the bulk of her correspondence, one must use the other series in this archive.

Marth's correspondence began eight days after taking office, and his twelve years as Executive Secretary are thoroughly documented. Records in this series demonstrate the Secretary's desire to reach out to the university community, neighboring AAUP chapters, the legal community, and state and federal officials. In addition to the materials gathered in this series, parts of Marth's correspondence are interspersed throughout the collection. Many letters and notes in this series reflect a relationship between Senator Claiborne Pell and Marth. Letters to Senator John Chaffee are also included in the series.

Rachel Grenier, like her predecessor, maintained correspondence with local and federal politicians, as well as the community external to the university. Records in this file reflect praise from members of the Executive Committee for Grenier's role as information provider and her keen grasp of the intricacies of the position she held. Special note is made of her political skills and ability to resolve grievances. This series is important as it relates to the subjects, intents and actions of the faculty union. Correspondence to and from Marth and Grenier concerning the Administration and the American Arbitration Association fill gaps that appear in other series in this collection.

This series is arranged chronologically by folder and chronologically within each folder.

Series 5. All University Collective Bargaining Committee (AUCBC)
The AUCBC series contains 1.25 linear feet of material pertaining to the actions of the collective bargaining committees. The AUCBCs are charged by the Association's constitution with the mission of establishing policies and procedures relating to renewed contract negotiations and are charged with naming the new Negotiating Team. The AUCBC is comprised of several subcommittees which have responsibility for reviewing such issues as fringe benefits, salary, grievance procedures, promotion, tenure and inequities. In order to fulfill its mission, the committee and its subcommittees solicit ideas and suggestions from members of the bargaining unit. Not all issues that are researched by AUCBC are necessarily passed on to the Negotiating Teams.

In addition to the above issues, the committee has also looked into insurance coverage, ground rules for negotiations, and the faculty annual review procedure. Like the Negotiating Teams, the committee is a dynamic entity. While there are similarities between each AUCBC there are also distinct differences. For this reason, files created by an AUCBC will differ somewhat from its predecessor and its successor. The continuity of the committees is maintained by sharing files such as minutes, proposals, agreements, articles and miscellany. Interesting to the researcher will be the minutes of each AUCBC. Through these files the reader discerns the motivations of the committee and the faculty as they debate items of importance to the upcoming negotiations. Also interesting are the three faculty attitude surveys which appear in this series. The raw data containing both solicited and unsolicited comments offer valuable insight into the university faculty at three distinct periods of time.

The series is arranged by contract period. The records are by alphabetical subject and chronological within each folder.

Series 6. Negotiations
This series contains the files generated by the Negotiating Teams from the first contract under the auspices of collective bargaining in 1972-1974 through the 1987/90 contract. Also included are files from the 1962 63, 1963-1964 and 1965-1966 salary agreements. Particularly useful is the 1972-1990 contract listing (folder 6) which provides a concise overview of the monetary benefits realized at each contract period.

Collective bargaining came to the university on the 21st day of December 1971. The first contract agreed to by the Administration and the collective bargaining unit went into effect on the 6th of November 1972. There is little documentation of the negotiations leading to that agreement in this series. As the union moved from contract to contract, record keeping became progressively more comprehensive. Many of the Negotiating Teams shared the same types of files, these include: agreements, legal actions, memorandums of agreement, proposals, and salary information. In some instances files were created which present items from the current contract and the AAUP demands for their revision.

Each of the Negotiating Teams also generated a correspondence file which provides useful information. The 1979/81 contract folder (#62) is a good example of the type of information one will find in the correspondence. Writings in this folder show the steady deterioration of communication between both parties. By June 18, 1979, Executive Secretary Ed Marth noted to Gerie Bledsoe of the national AAUP that "a strike at URI may be unavoidable." The strike did occur as Marth predicted. Other files in the Negotiations series include Ed Marth's notebook from the 1981-1983 contract negotiations which allows the researcher a succinct aid to the AAUP negotiation process for this contract.

The series is arranged chronologically by contract period and by date within each file folder.

Series 7. Strike
Files in this series include: strike songs and poems written by members of the faculty, depositions from the resulting arbitration, faculty attitude surveys from 1977 and 1978, pay for work grievances filed by faculty members not paid during the strike days, and a faculty attendance roster which lists who reported for work during the strike. Also included are an undated student petition requesting the Administration to bring the strike to a speedy end, a complaint to the Commission of Judicial Tenure and Discipline made by the AAUP against Judge McKiernan, and records of loans made to faculty members suffering financial stress resulting from the strike.

The faculty strike in 1979 was an important event in the history of the AAUP and the University as well. Not before, and not since, have negotiations broken down so completely so as to precipitate this type of job action. During 1979 five AAUP faculties across the nation were on strike. Academe reported that the strike at the University of Rhode Island was the longest in the Association's collective bargaining history. Fallout from the strike touched on many areas; some faculty lost pay for time missed during the strike, others gained the distrust of their colleagues by crossing the picket line. The financial result was a 7.22% increase in pay for the first year of the contract and an increase of 8.6% for the second year of the contract as well as promotion increases and stipends for chairpersons.

This series is arranged alphabetically by subject and chronologically within each folder. Much of the material in this series is undated.

Series 9. Grievances
The files in this series are broken into two groups: Individual Grievances and Class Grievances. These records create the second largest component of the collection. Included in this series are four hundred sixty eight grievances filed between 1972 and 1990. The main component of this series contains four hundred forty five individual grievances. Subseries A: Class Grievances contains twenty three class grievances. The series contains grievances that were filed and brought to resolution, filed and withdrawn and those that were resolved through arbitration. Also included at this point in time are approximately twenty grievances that have been sealed with a caveat. These grievances, resolved in favor of the grievant, are not to be referenced as precedent setting in subsequent grievance procedures.

A draft index to the grievances filed over these 18 years has been compiled and is on file with the AAUP office in Roosevelt Hall. Once revised this index will provide a comprehensive listing of all of the grievances filed with the AAUP from 1972 through 1990.

This series consists of folders arranged alphabetically by last name of the grievant. In the case that an individual has filed more than one grievance, those complaints are filed chronologically. Restrictions will apply to this series. Permission to do research in these files must be given by the AAUP and the University Archivist.

Series 10. Women's Inequities Class Action Suit
This complex suit was filed on behalf of female faculty members who claimed a systematic process of discrimination based on sex. The Class Action Suit is comprised of four suits: Chang v University of Rhode Island (Class Action); Seleen v University of Rhode Island (Class Action); Krayack v University of Rhode Island (Individual Action); and Roworth v University of Rhode Island (Individual Action).

Material from the class action suit accounts for forty four linear feet of processed material. Records in this series are broken into the following groups: Subseries A: Documentation of the case; interrogatories, motions, pleadings and other legal documents are contained in this subseries. Subseries B: Individual Files; information from and about the various individuals involved in the class action suit. Subseries C: Department Files; as a part of the case university departments were called on to provide information regarding potential discrimination. Subseries D: Subject Files; among other files in this subseries are records of correspondence, analyses and background legal cases. Subseries E: Affirmative Action/ Equal Opportunity (AA/EEOP); contains department, college and university AA/EEOP plans and evaluations. Subseries F: Searches; the original creators of these files set aside some files of departmental and university personnel searches. Additional searches can be found interspersed with department files in Subseries C. Subseries G: Brown University; this is a similar case which occurred at Brown University. Subseries H: Computer Printouts; contain a diverse set of data noting various demographic characteristics of the faculty over the course of the class action suit.

Series 12. Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET), Joint AAUP-Regents Committee On
This series contains memos related to student evaluation of teaching (SET). The memos highlight events that catalyzed change in the way SET data was collected, interpreted, and publicized. For example, in 1979, a student news article about the best and worst professors, based on SET scores, led to the suspension and redesign of the SET process. This series does not include more than a few committee meeting minutes or reports, but it does include relevant faculty senate bills and appendices to the collective bargaining agreements. The series is arranged chronologically.
