The University Committees series contains documents relating to Harrison's work as a member of various University of Rhode Island committees. Harrison was active in university governance, and held the position of Parliamentarian in the Faculty Senate, the Arts and Sciences Faculty, and the URI General Faculty. Harrison authored a number of administrative reports for various University committees, and was also involved in the creation and revision of various editions of the Faculty and University Manuals.

The largest number of records in the series relates to Harrison's involvement in the Faculty Senate and his work with various Senate committees. Harrison served in the Faculty Senate in various capacities from its inception in 1960 until his retirement in 1977. He served on the Executive Committee from 1960 to 1967, as Vice-Chairman of the Senate in 1966-67, and as Chairman in 1963-64. Harrison also served as Chairman of several Senate committees, including the Committee on Curricular Affairs, the Constitution and By-Laws Committee, and the Special Committee to Study the Faculty Center.

Other committees that have a significant amount of records in the series include the Arts and Sciences Faculty, the Faculty Center Association, the Friends of the URI Library, the Graduate Council, the Graduate Faculty, the General Faculty, and the American Association of University Professors. Records relating to the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) include documents from 1953-56, at a time when the AAUP chapter at URI was a professional organization created by the faculty that advised the administration on matters of academic freedom, salary equity, tenure, and termination of faculty. The AAUP did not represent the faculty at URI as a collective bargaining agent until 1971. Many of the documents were heavily annotated by Harrison.

Series 2. Teaching and Advising

The Teaching and Advising series contains records pertaining to Harrison's activities as a professor of Zoology, an advisor to students, a member of graduate thesis committees, and an advisor for undergraduate independent work. While most of the documents relate to courses at the University of Rhode Island, several folders contain material from summer courses Harrison taught at Wesleyan University in 1957 and Brown University in 1958.

Arrangement: Folders in the series are arranged alphabetically by title, with folders containing materials on specific courses labeled by course code. Since course names and codes changed a number of times during Harrison's time at URI, course codes are arranged under the following headings:Zool 19: represents HistologyZool 141: represents General (Cellular) PhysiologyZool 41: represents General and Comparative Physiology, which had the course number 141 from 1950-1955, and 41 from 1955-1970Zool 42: represents courses in Human Physiology. Some Human Physiology courses could be taken for graduate or undergraduate credit, and had both lecture and laboratory sections. The specific course titles represented by this folder heading are Zool 42: Introduction to Human Physiology, which Harrison taught from 1952-1965, and Zool 142: Advanced Human Physiology, which was introduced in 1960, and was offered until 1965. The two courses were merged into a single course offering in 1965, and the course number and title became Zool 42: Human Physiology. The course number was changed again in 1967 to Zool 143 and 144, for the lecture and laboratory sections. In 1970, the course title and number were changed to Zool 142: Introductory Human Physiology, and again in 1973, to Zool 242, with the laboratory section as Zool 244.Zool 43: represents the course Physiology of Muscular Activity, which had the course number Zool 43 from 1950-1970, and Zool 143 from 1970-1973. The Research and Publications series contains documents dating from 1934-1976, relating to Harrison's research projects, presentations at professional conferences, and materials prepared for publication. The documents pertain to research conducted while he was a graduate student, a professor at URI, and serving in the U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps. Harrison also acted as a consultant at the URI Crime Lab, testing crime scene evidence for local and state police in
Rhode Island, as well as for the Rhode Island Department of Health. While working in the Crime Lab, he also conducted several studies to refine scientific techniques used in criminal investigations.

• Genetics of Lebistes: The Nature and Inheritance of Hunchback, (1940-1941), Harrison s M.A. thesis at Wesleyan University. The study is referred to as "Lebistes Study" in folder titles.
• Studies on the Dissociation of Biochemical and Morphological Aspects of Embryonic Development, (1947-1949), Harrison's Ph.D. dissertation from Yale University. The study is referred to as "Embryonic Development Study" in folder titles.
• Dispersion of Radio Opaque Particles in the Stomach and Intestine, a study conducted with Frederick R. Steggerda, professor in the Physiology Department at the University of Illinois, during Harrison's sabbatical from URI in 1959. The study is referred to as "Dispersion Study" in folder titles.
• Cytochrome Oxidase Activity and Growth of the Yolk-Free Embryo of the Grasshopper, Melanoplus Differentialis, During Development, (1967-1968), a study conducted with M. Ronald Glaser, one of Harrison's graduate students. The study is referred to as "Melanoplus Study" in folder titles.

The series also includes drafts and notes for a textbook with the planned title "Applied Physiology of Physical Activity", which was never completed. There are also texts of speeches Harrison delivered before professional conferences, and manuscripts for several articles he prepared for publication. The Education series contains records on Harrison's activities as a student during his undergraduate and graduate years. The documents cover Harrison's course work at Oberlin College (B.A. 1938), Springfield College (1938-1939), Wesleyan University (M.A. 1939), the Marine Biological Laboratory at
Woods Hole, Massachusetts (1939, 1941), and Yale University (M.S. 1942, Ph.D. 1949). The records are mainly concerned with courses in the biological sciences. There is a single folder containing an essay on literature.

The series also contains records from Harrison's attendance at the U.S. Navy's Senior Reserve Officer's Course in 1969, and several other seminars and symposia he attended while a professor of zoology at URI.
