Scope & content

The collection consists of a series of interviews with 26 members of the University of Rhode Island administrative staff and faculty regarding events that had a direct influence on the students, staff, and faculty of the University primarily during the mid 1960’s through to the early 1970’s.

The collection contains 38 original tapes and 9 duplicate copies. There are no transcripts for this collection. Except for where noted, signed release forms accompany each interview.

A comprehensive index listing of subjects, individuals, and events was compiled in the summer of 1980 by Ms. Karen Romanko. The index is included at the end of the collection.

During the indexing phase of the project, each tape was keyed to the frame counter of a tape recorder, but because two different recording machines were used, two different tape counter measuring standards were employed. Most of the tapes were indexed using a machine that measured 680 units per side of a 90 minute tape. However, the Baum, Beckman, Crandall, Farnum, Ferrante, and the Fiske tapes were indexed using a machine that measured 440 units per side of a 90 minute tape. This may result in the need for recalculation when attempting to locate a segment of interest.
