The records of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island, 1810-2003, document the activities of the Anglican Church in Rhode Island from the early nineteenth century through to the twenty-first century. The collection is divided into eleven series documenting the Church's administrative, religious, cultural, and financial activities from 1810 to 2003. This collection complements Mss. Gr. 41, Records of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island, 1715-1990. |

Scope & content
In addition to the records generated by the diocese itself, records of Episcopal churches throughout the diocese were deposited in the cathedral as the churches closed or were merged with other churches. Individual members of the clergy and laity also donated records to the cathedral from both active and disincorporated churches.
Since the records originated from a variety of sources, their provenance is uncertain. Over the years much material appears to have been lost due to frequent movement of the records. As a result, only a partial record of a wide variety of diocesan activities has been preserved.
The collection is comprised of the correspondence of Bishop
George Hunt (1990-1994) and Bishop
Geralyn Wolf (1996- ), administrative records of Bishop George Nelson Hunt and his office, administrative records for the School for Deacons, 1959-1999, and the
School for Ministries
, 1983-1996 and the administrative files of the churches which belonged to the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island.
Additional materials within the collection consist of the records of three committees/commissions -- the
Evangelism Commission
of the Diocese, the
Standing Committee
of the Diocese and the
Standing Committee on Human Affairs
-- which operated within the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island, and the records for the Diocese's
Nathan Bourne Crocker Library
.
The records also contains a collection of bulk mailings sent by the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island to its member clergy of announcements of upcoming events and meetings within the diocese, flyers of community events of interest to churches and clergy, invitations to services of ordination to the priesthood, memoranda from the diocese, correspondence and information on financial issues specific to the clergy vocation.
The collection is rounded out by its Scrapbooks and Realia series. The Scrapbook series contain newspaper clippings, humorous cartoons on religious themes, and photographs, which chronicle the celebration of twenty years of the ordination of women to the Episcopal priesthood. The Realia series consists of artifacts of the diocese, such as official Bishop's seals, portraits, pencil sketches, Cathedral blueprints and a six-piece pewter communion set.

Biographical or Historical Information
Episcopal worship in
Rhode Island dates to 1635 with the arrival in what is now
Cumberland of the Rev.
William Blackstone, an Anglican priest from
Boston. An itinerant preacher, Blackstone preached regularly to Indians and settlers in a field beneath the "Catholic Oak" in
Lonsdale. He also traveled astride a large white bull from settlement to settlement, stopping to preach and administer the sacraments whenever requested to do so. Blackstone built no churches, however, and Anglicans in Rhode Island continued to rely on itinerant priests to minister to their needs for the remainder of the seventeenth century.
It was not until the beginning of the eighteenth century that the first Anglican Church was built in Rhode Island. In 1698, a small congregation in
Newport petitioned
Lord Bellomont, the Royal Governor of Massachusetts, to assist it in obtaining a permanent minister. The application was approved and
Trinity Church
was built in 1701. It was followed shortly by St. Paul's in
Narragansett (1707), St. Michael's in
Bristol (1720), and King's Church, now St. John's, Cathedral, in
Providence (1722).
Slow steady growth and the remarkably lengthy tenure of their ministers characterized the Anglican Churches in the colonial years. Rev.
John Usher served St Michael's for 52 years (1723-1775); the Rev.
James Honyman ministered to the congregation of
Trinity Church for 46 years (1704-1750); and the great Protestant divines, Rev.
James MacSparran and the Rev.
Samuel Fayerweather, served St. Paul's for a total of 50 years between 1721 and 1774.
The coming of the American Revolution jeopardized this stability and the very existence of the Anglican Church in America. Prayers for the King of England and the royal family were included in the Anglican Prayer Book as part of the services. As tension between Great Britain and its American colonies increased, continued recitation of such prayers became a divisive issue between the clergy and their American congregations. The congregations insisted that prayers for the king be omitted from Sunday services and the clergy insisted on retaining them. As a result of this impasse, both King's Church in
Providence and St. Paul's in
Narragansett were closed for the duration of the Revolutionary War. In addition, St. Michael's in
Bristol burned to the ground when British gunboats shelled the town in 1778. Only Trinity Church in
Newport remained open throughout the Revolution and its congregation was deeply divided by the conflict.
By war's end the Anglican Church in America and Rhode Island was moribund. Churches had been closed or destroyed, congregations were divided, and clergy were holding services whenever and wherever possible in order to keep their flocks together. In 1789, however, three American bishops, including
Samuel Seabury of Connecticut, met to form the House of Bishops of the newly organized Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America.
The following year, the Rev.
William Smith of Trinity church in Newport, the Rev.
Moses Badger of King's Church, Providence, and lay representatives of St. Michael's, Bristol and St. Paul's, Narragansett met in
Newport to organize a
Diocese of Rhode Island
. On Nov. 18, 1790, the delegates to this first Diocesan Convention voted to create a diocese and named
Samuel Seabury, Bishop of Connecticut, as the Bishop of Rhode Island. Seabury accepted and served as bishop of both dioceses until his death in 1796. Because of its small size and inability to support its own bishop, the Diocese of Rhode Island continued to share a bishop with one or more of the New England states until 1843 when the Diocese elected
John Henshaw as the Bishop of Rhode Island.
King's Church in deference to patriotic sensibilities became St. John's Church in 1794 and the diocese continued its steady growth throughout the nineteenth century. By the time of the Diocesan Centennial in 1890, the diocese had grown from four parishes with approximately 200 communicants to thirty-five parishes with more than 9,000 communicants. The leadership of the diocese was very stable in it first century as well.
Alexander Viets Griswold served as Bishop for thirty-two years (1811-43) and
Thomas March Clark for forty-nine years (1854-1903).
The continued growth of the diocese into the twentieth century highlighted the growing need to have a cathedral as the administrative center and the religious focal point of the diocese. Bishop
William McVickar first broached the issue in 1907 and was instrumental in forming a
Cathedral Corporation
two years later. It was not until 1929, however, that St. John's Church in
Providence, the former King's Church, became the Cathedral of St. John and the seat of the diocese.
Over the next forty years, the Cathedral Close developed around the Cathedral of St. John as the diocese sought to bring together in one location its administrative and religious headquarters. Though plans for a Cathedral Close had been developed as early as 1931, it was not until
John Seville Higgins became bishop in 1955 that the plans began to reach fruition. Higgins immediately announced a plan to move the diocesan office to the cathedral and to develop the block around the cathedral as the center of diocesan life. During the next 17 years under Bishop Higgins's leadership, the diocese completely restored the cathedral inside and out, constructed a new headquarters building, a parish house, and a fifty-two bed medical facility known as
Hallworth House
. The diocese also converted five homes it owned on
Benefit Street into apartments for the elderly, built a Synod Hall in the basement of the cathedral, and converted the Chapel into a diocesan library named in honor of
Nathan Bourne Crocker, the distinguished nineteenth century rector of St John's. By 1972, when Bishop Higgins retired, the Cathedral Close Project had been completed and the diocese had what Bishop
James DeWolf Perry envisioned in his first address to the
Diocesan Convention in 1911 as "a beautiful group of buildings and grounds as a witness to the religious motives which inspired the founder of the City."
In 1990, the Diocese of Rhode Island celebrated its two hundredth anniversary. The four colonial churches with barely 200 communicants had grown into a vibrant diocese of sixty-six parishes with more than 16,000 communicants. The church that had barely survived the upheaval of the American Revolution now plays a significant role in the religious, cultural, and social life of Rhode Island. As it looks back with pride on the accomplishments of its first two hundred years, the diocese also looks forward to the challenges of the next two hundred.
The Rt. Rev.
George Hunt served the Diocese as its 11th Bishop from 1980 to 1994. Bishop Hunt is perhaps best noted for his long struggle to call the state's government to accountability, crusading fearlessly against corruption, organized crime, and gambling, and for his insistence that the process for ordination in the Diocese would not discriminate against anyone on the basis of gender or sexual orientation.
Geralyn Wolf was elected the 12th Bishop of Rhode Island on September 17, 1995. She was consecrated as Bishop on February 17, 1996 , at the Rhode Island Convention Center.

The Bishop’s Correspondence series consists of letters written by Bishop
George Hunt (1990-1994) and Bishop
Geralyn Wolf (1996- ) to friends, colleagues, clergy, church leaders, congregations, committee members, parishioners, donors and community organizations.
During a period of transition between Bishops Hunt and Wolf (Feb - Dec 1995), the duties of the office and related correspondence were carried out by the staff of the Bishop’s office and the members of the
Standing Committee
of the Diocese.

The Bishop Hunt’s Administrative Files series consists of the administrative records of Bishop
George Nelson Hunt and his office. Some of the records are prior to or after Hunt's tenure, however, the bulk of the records were created during his tenure. These records appear to have been maintained in the Bishop’s Office. Included are records of diocesan committees such as the
Lay Ministries Committee

Human Affairs Commission

Cathedral Corporation
and of charitable foundations such as the
Gammell Fund
and
Fosterian Fund
. Other Episcopal organizations represented in the records include the

Types of records include correspondence, diocesan directories, minutes of meetings, committee reports, budget files, proceedings of House of Bishops and Province I Synod, non-parochial clergy report forms, rosters of congregational visits (ROTA), records of baptisms and confirmations performed by Bishop Hunt, the Bishop’s personal appointment calendars, press coverage and photographs of the Bishop, and files concerning the work of the various boards of Episcopal schools and homes on which Bishop Hunt served.
The Episcopal Diocese and its bishops have long been active in the social as well as religious life of Rhode Island and this is documented in files on Hispanic ministries, chaplaincy ministries and issues such as AIDS, abortion and family. (See also Series VIII: Nathan Bourne Crocker Library.)
Of particular interest are early records collected in conjunction with the celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island, records of ecumenical efforts such as the Abrahamic Accord, and files documenting Bishop Hunt’s trip to Romania and its orphanages.

The Rt. Rev.
George Nelson Hunt served the Diocese as its 11th Bishop from 1980 to 1994. Bishop Hunt is perhaps best known for his long struggle to call the state's government to accountability, crusading fearlessly against corruption, organized crime, and gambling, and for his insistence that the process for ordination in the Diocese would not discriminate against anyone on the basis of gender or sexual orientation.

The
School for Deacons
was an educational enterprise of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island under the general oversight of the Bishop. The school provided a program for the education and formation of deacons in the Episcopal Church. Deacons fulfill a ministry of communication between and service to the church and the world in addition to performing liturgical ministries at churches as assigned by the Bishop.

Parish Administration
Files series consists of files on the administration and activities of the churches which belonged to the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island. Included are church annual reports, parish profiles, reports of diocesan visits to individual parish churches, letters of agreement between the rector and vestry, Vestry and Annual Meeting agenda and minutes, church committee meeting minutes, correspondence, memoranda, feasibility studies for building projects, financial statements and reports, records of property sales, church histories, church directories and newspaper clippings.
Also included at the beginning of the series are files of forms listing parish delegates to the
Episcopal General Convention
and forms providing information on each individual parish church.

The Chapel of St. John’s Cathedral was converted into a diocesan library in 1972. It was named in honor of
Nathan Bourne Crocker, the distinguished rector of St. John’s from 1803-1865. The
Nathan Bourne Crocker Library
closed its doors in the summer of 2004.
The series consists of library records and committee files, records of library holdings and policies, furnishings, finances and personnel. Included in this series are newspaper clippings on Bishops Belden, Higgins, Hunt, Seabury and Wolf. Also of interest are notes and printed material related to the involvement of the Episcopal Church in American Black history and two cassette tapes from the Parish Archives Workshop put on by the
Cathedral Library Committee
.
Also included is a hand-written copy of a sermon delivered at the 1790 Episcopal General Convention, bulletins from memorial services for Episcopal clergy, as well as materials from the
Rhode Island Herstory Project
.

This scrapbook contains clippings from the Rhode Island Churchman and local newspapers, correspondence and color reproductions of Dacca culture and points of interest. Episcopal missionary work is the focus of this scrapbook compiled by Mrs.
Halsey DeW. Howe. The scrapbook clippings are arranged in chronological order.

This scrapbook contains comic strips clipped from magazines and newspapers that comment humorously on religious themes. Most clippings are undated, but range from the 1940’s. The compiler is unknown and clippings are arranged in no apparent order.
Ministries of Women: Celebrating Twenty Years - 1974-1994
This scrapbook marks the twentieth anniversary of the ordination of women to the Episcopal priesthood. Included is a written introduction to the history of women’s ordination by
Judith A. Davis and a history of women’s ministry in the Episcopal denomination by
Shirley M. Kozar. The scrapbook was compiled by
Sally Whitehead and its cover was designed by
Shirley Friend. The scrapbook highlights the accomplishments of women as volunteers, church staff, deacons, priests, and parishioners of the Diocese of Rhode Island as well as women involved with Episcopal homes for children. Captioned photographs are arranged by Diocesan deanery and subsequently divided by parish.

Series 11. Realia, 1810-1990

The Realia series consists of artifacts of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island. Included are the official seals of Bishops J. P. K. Henshaw and James DeWolf Perry, a letter to the Bishop of
New Hampshire from Bishop Henshaw with a wax impression of the Bishop’s seal and blueprints of St. Johns’ Cathedral from 1869. Also included are a citation for Bishop John S. Higgins from the Rhode Island Speaker of the House and a six piece pewter communion service set dating back to the late 1700’s with one plate fashioned by Samuel Hamlin(1746-1801).
This series also includes works of art such as a portrait of Bishop Samuel Seabury(1790-1796) by J. D. Cornwall, the reproduction of the seal of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island, and two portraits of the Archbishop of Canterbury (England)dating from the mid-19th century. Also included is a photograph (with key) of all Archbishops and Bishops attending the Pan-Anglican Synod at Lambeth Palace in September 1867 and a document regarding the construction of St. John's Cathedral signed by President James Madison.
Of particular interest are three works of art by Helen M. Gross; pencil sketches depicting the interior of the former Bishop's residence at
10 Brown Street. Helen M. Gross, a local Rhode Island artist, is well-known for her drawings of historic buildings in South County.
