Biographical note
Paule Stetson Loring (1899-1968) was a Rhode island nautical artist who developed an international reputation for his sketches of the sea, an accomplished boater and sailor, and, for several decades, a well-known editorial cartoonist and feature story writer for the Providence
Journal-Bulletin.
Born in Maine, the diminutive Loring lived for much of his life at "Loring's Shanty," an artist's and seaman's shanty alongside Wickford Harbor in Wickford, R.I. It was at the shanty that Loring's life and work combined with his love of the people and boats of coastal New England to create
well-known and remembered nautical art.
A self-taught artist, Loring began his career, after a series of unrelated odd jobs, when he wandered into the offices of the Springfield (Mass.) Times-Union looking for a job in the early 1920's. Put to work drawing advertisements, Loring made a name for himself with his original caricature of Calvin Coolidge. He moved on to the Providence
Journal-Bulletin soon after, and worked there as editorial cartoonist until
his retirement in 1962. In retirement Loring continued his tremendous output of cartoon, sketches, and paintings, and his wife calculated that he composed some 10,000 sketches during this life.
He had a life-long concern with preserving the maritime heritage contained in old boats, an interest exhibited most strongly in his successful attempt to reconstruct a Block Island "double-ender" sail boat.
After Loring's death this boat was donated to the Maritime Museum in Mystic, Connecticut.
This collection of Loring's work contains several hundred examples of the various facets and periods in Loring's career.

Series 18. Yankee Magazine
Paule Loring was a longtime contributor of cartoons, illustrations and other art work to Yankee Magazine. His cartoons and illustrations were used both to accompany specific articles in the magazine and as “stand alone” illustrations or cartoons.
There are forty-eight folders of the original artwork for these Yankee Magazine illustrations which were part of the original gift of the Paule Loring papers by his widow, Virginia Loring, in 1989. They are arranged chronologically by the date of the issue in which they appeared and are identified either by the title of the article they accompanied or by a significant line of text from the illustration.
An addendum to this series was made in the summer of 1999 when Judson Hale, editor emeritus of Yankee Magazine donated 128 “drawing board” pages of Loring cartoons to Special collections. There are multiple cartoons on each of the 17’’x11’’ drawing boards. These cartoons were apparently based on unusual and/or humorous events described in various New England newspapers. Loring depicted these events in a series of humorous cartoons which appeared in Yankee Magazine under the collective title of “Yankee Tintinnabulations.”
These latter cartoons are undated and have been arranged numerically by the number assigned to them by Special Collections staff. They are identified by the title or the most significant line of text from the cartoon in the upper left corner of the drawing board.

Series 19. This Week
This Week was published weekly, then bi-weekly in South County during the summer months. It served as a guide to visitors to South County and as a vehicle for local advertisers. Paule Loring’s work frequently graced the cover of this publication, as well as accompanying advertisements for local businesses including his own Loring’s Shanty in Wickford. The publication continued to feature Loring’s work on its cover for nearly thirty years after his death in 1968.
The Illustrations are arranged chronologically by year.

Series 20. Small Sketches and Sketchbooks
This series consists of original and printed sketches and sketchbooks of a wide variety of Paule Loring’s artwork. The sketches included in this series were done for a number of purposes, including advertising, Christmas cards, book illustrations, and illustrations to accompany newspaper and magazine articles. The individual sketches are arranged alphabetically by the title of the sketch.
These individual sketches are followed by several small sketchbooks in which Loring did many drafts of cartoons and illustrations. Some of the sketchbooks have a central theme such as “Cape Cod” or “boats” and are so identified. Others simply contain miscellaneous sketches with no unifying theme. The sketchbooks are grouped together at the end of the series.
