Abstract: |
The Episcopal Church Women of Rhode Island consist of materials from 1875-1987, documenting its administrative, and financial activities throughout the twentieth century life of the organization. The collection, which is divided into four series, consists of correspondence, organization publications, copies of the organization's articles of incorporation, constitution and by-laws, photographs, lists of officers, surveys and questionnaires, annual reports, meeting minutes, and financial documents. |

Scope & content
Though comprehensive, there are some gaps in the records. Though the organization was founded in 1878, very few records exist which predate the twentieth century. The records contained herein span the twentieth century life of the organization and document its administrative, and financial activities.

Historical Information
The Episcopal Church Women, Diocese of Rhode Island, was founded in 1878 as the Rhode Island Branch of the
Woman's Auxiliary
to the
Board of Missions
. As its role broadened and became more central to the life of the Episcopal Church, the organization changed its name to that of
Episcopal Church Women
in 1959. Today it is a charitable and service organization of women affiliated with the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island. The state organization is a loose association of local parish groups which is in turn part of a regional and national organization of Episcopal Church Women. At the state level, the organization is concerned primarily with fund-raising and service activities for a wide range of social service agencies and overseas missions.

Included are correspondence, organization publications, copies of wills in which the Episcopal Church Women is named as a beneficiary, organizational handbooks and manuals, copies of the organization's articles of incorporation, constitution and by-laws, photographs, lists of officers, and surveys and questionnaires.

This series contains the printed Annual Reports to the Diocese of the Episcopal Church Women. The Annual Reports document the program and fiscal activities of the organization. In addition to the narrative annual report of the president, the volumes also include reports of the other officers and committees, a directory of officers and corresponding secretaries for each local parish, a calendar of events, and a copy of the constitution and by-laws of the organization.

The records contained in this series document the financial activities of the Episcopal Church Women for an approximately fifty year period in the mid to late twentieth century. Financial records for the first fifty years of the organization's existence were apparently lost or destroyed. Types of records represented include cash receipt and disbursement ledgers for specific programs, check registers, financial statements, investment reports, and records relating to the involvement of the Episcopal Church Women in the United Thank Offering.
