Historical Note
The University of Rhode Island Agronomy Station was established in 1946 under Director Dr. Robert Smith Bell. It was an outgrowth of the original Agricultural Experiment Station that was chartered in 1888 with funds procured through the Hatch Act of 1887. The Agronomy Station specialized in the study and application of turfgrass science and was the first of its kind in the United States.
