Biographical/Historical Note
The undergraduate Nursing program at Rhode Island State College began in September 1945. The program began with nine students within the School of Home Economics. In 1947, a Division of Nursing was established with Miss Louisa VVhite as their first director (see also MSG 42 - Louisa VVhite Papers). Later in 1977, VVhite Hall was opened as the home for the College of Nursing and name in Louisa White's memory for her years and dedication to the program and the university. The official School of Nursing was created in 1950, and became a degree granting college at the University of Rhode Island in 1960. A Master of Science degree program began in 1970 and a doctorate program in 1985.
