Historical note
Phil Weld (1914-84) was a journalist and newspaper publisher who began competitive multihull racing in the late 1960s. He commissioned the noted multihull designer, Dick Newick (1926-2013), to design three yachts for him between 1973 and 1978, to be raced in various ocean races such as the Round Britain Race, the Route du Rhum, and the 1980 OSTAR race. The first trimaran Newick designed for Weld, "Gulf Streamer", was capsized by a rogue wave north of Bermuda, with Weld and his crew-mate surviving in the upturned hull for 4 1/2 days before being rescued. The second trimaran, appropriately named "Rogue Wave", was designed in 1977 but due to a rules change would have been too long for the 1980 OSTAR race, in which Weld planned to complete. The third Newick design for Weld was "Moxie", which was sailed to victory by Weld in the OSTAR, making him the oldest sailor, and first American, to win the race.
