Biographical/Historical Note
The Rives family was a prominent political family originally hailing from Virginia as one of its First Families. When William Cabell Rives (1793-1868) married Judith Page Walker (1802-1882), the marriage brought with it the Castle Hill plantation, which would remain their primary residence for the rest of his life. Subsequent generations of the Rives family would come to own William C. Rives' summer home in Cobham, Virginia and later the nearby Edgewood Estate. The descendants of the Rives family worked in various prominent political, legal, and civil positions, and several became authors. Through marriage, the Rives family became related to other prominent families, particularly those from the north, including the Barclays, Sigourneys, and Kings.
