Abstract:
The Bureau of Business Research records contain reports and correspondence related to the mission of developing a close relationship between the Department of Economics at Brown University and the Rhode Island business and manufacturing community. The reports chiefly concern labor turnover and the jewelry industry in Rhode Island. Correspondents include well known Rhode Island firms such as the Brown and Sharpe Manufacturing Company, the Davol Rubber Company, and the Gorham Manufacturing Company. The records are dated from 1919 to 1939.

Abstract:
The Butler Hospital records contain many of the hospital's records from its founding in 1841 to approximately its 50th anniversary in 1891. These records document the changing attitudes toward the mentally ill in Europe and the United States in the early 19th century as well as communal responsibility for the less fortunate, the responsibility of the wealthy for sharing both their wealth and their expertise, the financial practices of the period, detailed specifications on the construction of the first hospital of any kind in Rhode Island, the hospital's expansion, and the day-to-day expenses of such an institution.

Eli Canfield, Episcopal clergyman and prominent member of the evangelical faction of the church, consist of sermons reflecting the religious and social beliefs of the period 1845 to 1885, personal manuscripts, and letters mainly to his son, James Hulme Canfield, educator. Canfield was born in Arlington, Vermont and served as a pastor in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.
