Abstract:
The Lonsdale Water Power Company, an unchartered corporation founded by the firm of Brown & Ives with Edward Carrington and others, was organized in 1825. The company proceeded to buy up estates and water rights along the Blackstone River in the towns of Smithfield and Cumberland, Rhode Island. In 1831, the company began construction of a mill - later called Lonsdale Mill No. 1- and organized around that mill the village they named Lonsdale in Smithfield. Included in this collection are: administrative records, 1834-1924; general accounts, 1831-1944; production records, 1836-1916; correspondence, 1832-1921; miscellany, 1910-45. Especially important are the minute of company meetings, 1834-1906.

Typed research notes prepared by Nancy Love covering the period between 1878 and 1952 are based on Elsie Bronson's manuscript ("RISD: A Half-Century Record, 1878-1928," 1932) as well as catalogues, yearbooks, correspondence, and corporate/administrative records. Narrative reports provide information about the development of Departments, Divisions, and Administrative offices, 1945-1950. The materials in this collection were gathered in preparation for the RISD's 75th Anniversary.

Barlow, Robert Bloch, W. Paul Cook, August Derleth, Ernest A. Edkins, Sonia H. Greene Davis (Lovecraft's wife), Frank Belknap Long, Jr., E. Hoffman Price, Clark Ashton Smith, and Donald Wandrei among many others. The collection also includes a small selection of photographs of Lovecraft, friends and associates and objects owned by Lovecraft.

The Malcolm Read Lovell, Jr., papers relate mainly to Lovell's public service in Michigan under Governor George Romney, and in Washington, under Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Reed was Undersecretary of Labor during the Reagan Administration, a former president of the National Planning Association, and Director of the Labor Management Institute at the George Washington University School of Business and Public Administration. The papers do include some personal papers related to his family and education (Brown University, Class of 1943).
