Abstract:: The Butler Hospital records contain many of the hospital's records from its founding in 1841 to approximately its 50th anniversary in 1891. These records document the changing attitudes toward the mentally ill in Europe and the United States in the early 19th century as well as communal responsibility for the less fortunate, the responsibility of the wealthy for sharing both their wealth and their expertise, the financial practices of the period, detailed specifications on the construction of the first hospital of any kind in Rhode Island, the hospital's expansion, and the day-to-day expenses of such an institution.

Abstract:: The Rudolph Fisher papers primarily contain various drafts and published copies of twenty-six Rudolph Fisher short stories and novels, as well as book reviews and essays. The collection also contains correspondence, publicity materials, personal papers, family papers and newsclippings. Materials cover Fisher’s life from 1919 to his death in 1934, as well as the work on behalf of Fisher done by his sister, Pearl, until 1983.

Abstract:: The Robert Holbrook Smith ("Dr. Bob") collection, most of which dates from 1936 to 1992, consists of a wide variety of materials, including an extensive selection of books and other printed materials; correspondence; manuscripts; business papers; photographs; certificates, awards and bonds; ephemera; and an assortment of artifacts. These materials are primarily associated with Robert Holbrook Smith and the organization he founded with William G. Wilson, Alcoholics Anonymous. It also includes materials associated with William G. Wilson; Anne Ripley Smith and Lois Burnham Wilson, the respective spouses of Smith and Wilson; and other family members, friends and AA associates.

Formal title:: Augustus A. White III (Class of 1957) documents relating to his career as a surgeon during the Vietnam War

Abstract:: This collection contains magazine articles and photographs related to the career of Augustus A. White III (Brown, Class of 1957) as an orthopedic surgeon. He is a Vietnam Veteran. He served 2 years as an army surgeon a year of which, August 1966-August 1967, he was stationed at the 85th Evacuation Hospital in the Qui Nhon region of Vietnam. During that year he also volunteered during his off-duty time at the St. Francis Leprosarium run by Catholic nuns in a nearby village where he treated patients fighting leprosy. He went on to have a distinguished career as the first African American to graduate from Stanford Medical School in 1961 and held positions in orthopedic surgery at Yale Medical School, Beth Israel Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He has also been keenly interested in issues of race, bias, and disparity in medical care and education. In 2011 he founded Harvard's Culturally Competent Care Education Program to begin combating the unconscious and conscious biases of health care professionals and educators.
